Republicans need to ask themselves a couple of questions before they battle over Barack Obama's eventual nominee to replace Justice Scalia on the Supreme Court. Is there any good reason to allow this president to change the ideological composition the Supreme Court radically? What is the political downside of denying him?
The GOP could start by making arguments about the Senate's duty to preserve the Supreme Court's integrity as a bulwark against the vagaries of democracy and executive abuse. And while that sounds like a fantastic case to me, I'm skeptical the average voter cares all that much about idealism in this year of grievance and anger. There are, however, a number of political reasons the GOP shouldn't - and can't - back down.
1. 'Obstructionism' Will Not Sink the GOP Not once during any of my media appearances about the Scalia vacancy have I been asked, "Do you believe Democrats will pay a price if the president nominates another hard-left ideologue?" Hosts are curious about whether Republican âoverreachâ will hurt the GOP in November

The GOP needs to grow a spine.
Good article. I’ll never vote Republican again if they cave on this.
Huh? Whaaaaat? Huh, what? The Supreme Court has been trafficking in the vagaries of democracy.
Battle? What the heck do they mean battle?
More to the point, will refusal to yield cost the Republicans any Senate or House seats? No? Then folks, face it - 0bama's got nothing.
Has Rich Lowry of the National Review come out to agree with Obama , Yet?
Yes, Obama will call them.names. so will Hillary and Bernie.
And the media will carry the message that Republicans are being obstructionists.
Yes, the Republicans may be afraid of what the liberals say about them.
So which is it?,,,,
Do Republicans take a stand and fight this battle?
Or do they give and and meekly allow a 5th liberal join the Supreme Court, but avoid having the MSNBC talking heads say mean things about them????
If they cave on this you can kiss the 2nd Amendment Rights away. This issue alone will be the spark that ignites yje civil unrest that Obama has sought to provoke for the past 7 years.
Keep your powder dry and look for the whites of their eyes.
If Cornyn caves on this I’ll vote for his ‘rat opponent next time he runs. Six of one, half a dozen of the other.
Won’t be a real fight, the Republicans will hold out for the best deal ( probably a couple of year tax cut for the wealthy) then will give Obama what he wants.

The MSM will demonize Republicans if they block the Obama selection. The Republicans need to do a better job of calling the MSM the communist water carriers that they are.
If the GOP had any unity and reliable principles, the best thing to do would be to let Obammy make his appointment, call the nominee to confirmation hearings and then bat him around like a toy every day between now and the election, pointing out the moral and intellectual bankruptcy of liberalism before soundly voting to reject the nominee sometime around Halloween.
Regarding the future of this nation, if this is not worth fighting over, nothing is.
You got that right. But they have no balls.
They care more about getting face time on network TV by being “moderate” lapdogs.
