I'm looking to purchase a new computer and would like some advice.
If you get Windows 10 machine, then just understand you are being spied on by the State.
Go with a Linux or Apple. I have both Windows 7 Pro and Apple. Apple was painful upfront in terms of cost, but after that smooth sailing. Windows 7 is good but like any other Windows device it requires weekly maintenance. I would say that eats up a chunk of time.
Linux is good security but it can get tricky at times. If you are not computer savvy, then get an Apple would be my advise.
Social Security Disability????? Huh?
Lap top for me but I refuse to buy one which requires a separate CD/DVD drive. That is what most manufacturers are selling now.
Try running any old programs or reinstalling ones with a player on your other lap.
I got a 25 inch HP screen from Best Buy for $129 plus sales tax. I wouldn't risk a Craigslist transaction to save $4.00. And I got it new in the box with cables instead of the risk of receiving stolen property.
Speaking of $129, and Dells, one can buy a new Dell (bottom of the line Intel Core 2 Duo Processor 3.0GHz Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 64-bit 4GB RAM ) for that price at Microcenter. (Win7 Professional)
Find your local shop that builds custom, get what you need not what the main brands want to sell.
That was the recommendation by my niece and nephew but they are both medical professionals so their needs are greater than mine.
With that being said, is it safe to assume that even the most basic Apple computer would exceed what I'm currently using my computer for? And how difficult is the learning curve in using an Apple?
Except maybe I can show you how to multiply 2X2
Yes.
(oh man)
We use desktops but I do have a laptop that I schlep around with me when I’m out of town. Lots of business related software programs but all our data resides on a Seagate. Added a full sized keyboard and wireless mouse to the laptop. My techie son laughs at all the extra stuff I carry when I’m going to use the laptop but I don’t care.
Hi -
I might of missed price range limitation and if privacy is important to you.
I honestly recommend an Apple Mac for privacy, security and principle.
Microsoft has yet again managed to piss off users (private and commercial) around the world with their latest version of Windows 10.
They have LIED to reviewers, Enterprises, users and IT security professionals.
They do NOT allow you to fully disable Windows 10 from assessing ALL of the files on your hard drive and ex-filtrate YOUR data for their analysis / use / data mining sale to data brokers.
This is a proven FACT.
Also, you can’t use anything other than Windows 10, because Windows 7 & 8 will no longer be supported with security fix updates in the not too distant future.
You could buy a generic Intel like PC / laptop and load Linux on it, but that is usually an option for geeks who love tinkering versus users who simply want to use their computer.
Apple so far is not as evil or a pain in the ass as Microsoft has proven to be.
Swordmaker is quite the Apple expert - reach out to him to see what he recommends.
Best FRegards
Does it look cool? Is it loud? Does it have a big clip?
I have a mid-range for gaming (GTX 960) love it.
AMEN!
“get an Apple would be my advice”
I just got an xps8900 16gb ram 1tb hdd for $800. Added a Samsung 950 pro and addonics card. For.a grand its quite A deal.
For laptop’s usb-c thunderbolt 3 pickings are slim and expensive. Dell xps1500 is the best money can buy for about $2000. Everyone else is 6mo to a year behind. Next year for a new laptop for me.
Ok Hot Tabasco, now you're narrowing it down.
Go ahead and throw out a number, a price you are willing to pay; and the folks here will give you the best options.
Computers (PC’s) are sold like cars. Base 23k tricked out 45k. PC’s have 6-10 considerations.
Get help / ask around. Make a list.
What are you willing to spend? Why?
Because PAR35 just let you know that < 200US can be done.
Because Dr. Sivana let you know an i5 is a great Intel Chip.
And because I'll tell you there is NOTHING like a Microsoft
Surface BOOK or Surface PRO for > 2500.00US !!
A best seller today on Amazon is 509US with:
Core i5, 8GB DDR3, 1TB, Windows 10, keyboard, mouse.
Bon Chance!
If you upgrade, you’re probably going to end up with Windows 10 or Windows 8.1 at least. The new interface will probably have a bit of a learning curve. I recommended installing Classic Shell, you can get it for free from: http://www.classicshell.net/
That changes the Windows interface back to the old Start Menu, instead of the tiled “Home” screen that you would normally be stuck with. It can’t mimic XP, but it can mimic Windows 7, which is pretty close to what you are familiar with.
Digital PDP 1170.
You should be able to get one cheap. But make sure you have the right sized room.
Vax 11-780 cluster...
I bought an acer with WIN 7 on Amazon
I appreciate your response but I have to admit, none of it makes sense to me........
