Asteroid TX68 is approaching!

Posted on 02/17/2016 2:03:07 AM PST by djf

Asteroid TX68 is coming!

OK, it's probably gonna miss... but maybe not!

Asteroid TX68, from it's name 2013 TX68 was discovered in 2013. It is supposed to approach closer than anything else recently, at .044 times the Lunar distance, or about 11,000 miles.

Not sure why they use LD as a measurement because LD changes all the time, but so it goes...

Comments or thoughts are always appreciated!

Oh, and btw, I call it an asteroid, but really it’s an NEO, or near-Earth object.

It’s dimensions are not all that huge, only being about 30 mtrs in diameter.

Not life on Earth ending size.

Bit would make a great 4th of July event!

Calculations based on available data indicates that at closest approach to Earth on March 5, 2013 TX68 could pass as far away as 9 million miles (14 million kilometers) or as close as 11,000 miles (17,000 kilometers).

Quite a wide margin.

You would think by now they would be able to predict these things better.

I was getting all calm and not bothered about it until I read on Wiki about the Russian meteorite that exploded over Chelyabinsk.

It is estimated to be about 20 mtrs in diameter.

And it produced an atmospheric blast of 500 KT.

So... see ya on March 6th!

Hopefully!

;-)

Since I am tired and cannot think straight - what differentiates an asteroid from a NEO or for that matter a flying rock? Is it the size or the distance?

If you haven’t read Lucifer’s Hammer, I recommend it highly. Or any of the Niven-Pournelle collaborations, for that matter. The Mote in God’s Eye is probably their best, but they’re all really good.

Well, I’m thinking it’s not exactly like it’s from the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, so technically it’s not an asteroid. But it might actually be an asteroid, albeit a small one. I can check my Flamarrions to see if there is anything there.

Thanks. I did read it many, many years ago. Great book!

Changes by an inch or two a year(slowly moves away). Also changes all the time by orbit shape. Still averages 240 000 miles ( some just round up to a quarter million miles).
Not enough change to not say LD

Consider me a NIMBY too. If it hits, I'd prefer it hit elsewhere and far away.

Hmmm, good timing - I'll be at Langley AFB for a wedding.

The average distance is fairly consistent, and everybody is familiar with the Moon and its relationship to Earth. I think that’s why they use it.
