Has FreeRepublic Jumped The Shark With Trump?
2/14/16 | OV

Posted on 02/14/2016 9:47:13 PM PST by OneVike

I have been a member of FreeRepublic since February 1998, and in all my years I have ever seen so many Freepers support, and defend such a leftist candidate as Donald Trump. In the old days, any candidate that spouted the rhetoric coming out of his mouth would have been received with unanimous hatred from Freepers.

Mitt Romney was met with scorn when he claimed to have changed and was more conservative than his record showed. However, The Donald says the same thing and he is allowed to wear his liberal record as badge of honor, because he has been born again. Never mind that his fruit smells like Skubala. Any Republican candidate in the past who supported partial birth abortion was considered dead on arrival with 99.9% of Freepers. Yet a vast number of Freepers today look at Trump's defense of PP, and attack the candidate who dares to bring it up at a debate.

Thinking I have stumbled in some black hole of Bizzaro World, I decided to spend most the night, after the debate yesterday, researching past posts and comments of many Freepers who support Trump. I must admit that I wasn't too shocked to see that not all, but the vast majority, of his supporters have joined FR within the last 8 years. However I pretty much only searched the opinions of his most ardent supporters.

Interestingly enough, the ones I researched, all demanded that both Houses of Congress go after Planned Parenthood for selling baby parts. Many of them even demanded that the House use their power of the purse to defund PP. Yet these very same individuals defend, and make excuse for Trump's defense of said abortion factory, or at least claim it's bothersome but will still support him. These same individuals, however, were demanding McConnell resign for failing to pass legislation in the senate defunding PP. I did similar searches on their opinions of various other topics that Trump defends which would normally be cause of revulsion from these supporters had it been any other politician.

Well, I must admit that I am rather stunned by the way they have so easily changed their stances.

Who would have known that those who accused Jimmy Carter of never meeting a dictator and communist he didn't like, would now tout that his endorsement of Trump is not Trumps problem, and some even claim it will help him with Democrat voters in November. So we are now to welcome a politician that will get votes from leftists?

I thought the idea was to win them over to conservatism, not to abandon our beliefs just to get them to vote for our guy. So when will Freepers decide we need to change our stances on topics like "Black Lives Matter" to get more blacks to vote for our guy, or maybe we can find a good Muslim candidate who has made billions and talks a good game. Hey, so what if he may support Sharia law, just think of all those Muslim votes we can get from refugees Obama shipped in and we could actually own Dearborn Michigan. There has got to be some great female politicians who support PP that we could get behind, After all, we do have a problem with the female vote, right?

Yea, I'm just an old timer with old time values from the days when The Donald was still giving money to the Clintons and laughing at Republicans for making such a big deal over BJs in the Oval Office. Yup, just a geezer who remembers the wall of separation set up by Jamie Gorelick to keep Clinton from being prosecuted over Witewater which led to the attack on 9/11.

I guess I'm a conspiracy believer who thinks 9/11 was Clinton's fault, not GW's, and that the Weapons of Mass Destruction the NY Times finally admitted existed were originally sold to the public by the Clinton's to help get the Democrats on board for the war on Iraq.

Those were the good old days when we used to rip apart fake politicians for trying too hard to fit into our club, instead of ripping the messengers for noticing a fake when we see one.

Yea, that was before FreeRepublic jumped the Shark.

You clearly know nothing about either Cruz or Trump.

-— Partly because, for the past umpteen years, the “conservatives” we support tell us we can go along for the ride -—

So we should vote for a liberal?

I think some conservatives went all in for Trump when he talked about the wall, dug in when he was attacked, and then got in the habit of defending him no matter what.

Sorry, but God opened our borders to destroy us because we continually consider abortion to of second, third, or fourth importance.

Really? You are God's appointed spokesperson? He told you this? So you are fine with having open borders until abortion is outlawed? Is that what you are saying? And which of the candidates is going to end abortion? Reagan didn't. Bush 1 didn't. Bush 2 didn't. So who is going to be this time that is going to end it?

God says little if anything about abortion in the scriptures...What God is concerned about is, 'Who is going to stand with Israel'??? And not for Israel's sake...God will take care of Israel...But for our motive...

Gen 12:2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:
Gen 12:3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.

“I think some conservatives went all in for Trump when he talked about the wall, dug in when he was attacked, and then got in the habit of defending him no matter what.”

That’s exactly what happened. They got emotionally invested in Trump, once you get emotionally invested in a person you start defending them regardless of whether they are in the right.

I think Trump served a purpose for this election cycle. Regardless of his past viewpoints, he got the right conversations started about immigration, veterans, jobs and government waste/stupidity. The concern I have with candidates from both wings of the uniparty are they all sound like tyrants that think they can bypass congress. Myself, I’m no more interested in having Donald Trump for a tyrant than I am Obeyme.

That said, I’d vote for Trump before I’d vote for Hellary. I tire of listening him tell me how smart he is, but he is certainly not a socialist.

Dude, you are in serious need of some meds.
Not for what you think but how you communicate it.

you have single-handedly proved this thread.

I don't understand his appeal at all.

There are a lot of posters here who aren't all that interested in seeing America great again. You, obviously, are included in that group.

Even though I don't agree with that sentiment, I do understand it.

“I am concerned about the nastiness of the Trump supporters on the site.”

I’m a Trump supporter. I never call Cruz supporters names & I have zip to say about Cruz except that I will vote for him in the general if he is the nominee. That being said, I sure have been called lots of names by Cruz, Bush, GOPe, etc, supporters. My response is always the same: “name calling = zero credibility.”

Go Trump!

If I were going to build a wall to keep out illegals I would build
it away from the river maybe 5 or 10 miles inside Texas.

*****************

The border patrol check points are located that way. The ones I’m familiar with
are several miles north of the border, maybe 30 or so miles in some cases.

You had posted;

" "In every country and in every age, the priest has been hostile to liberty. He is always in alliance with the despot, abetting his abuses in return for protection to his own. It is error alone that needs the support of government. Truth can stand by itself."

Thomas Jefferson - in a letter to Horatio Spofford, 1814 "

I take it that Jefferson was not speaking there about all Christian ministers, but instead chiefly the Catholic ones who entitled themselves "priests", though in this inclusive to large extent of Anglican Catholics in addition to Romanist Catholic priests yet more acutely (for the latter).

The key operative phrasing in his expressed thinking being; "...in alliance with the despot, abetting his abuses in return for protection to his own."

Otherwise; the free exercise of religion, in the same 1st Amendment which protects the freedom of speech, is likewise, similarly protected.

https://www.law.cornell.edu/constitution/first_amendment

Jefferson had no opposition to the Bill of Rights, but rather had encouraged Madison (Madison, who it is generally understood is the author of the first proposed form of the Bill of Rights);

And I suspect the opposite side could or would say the same about your understanding.

I’m curious how many paid ‘trumpsters’ there are. It would be interesting to see how many posters are coming from the same IP address.

What Cruz will do about abortion is stop funding for Obamacare first and foremost. Also support judges who will be pro-life. Remove government funding for any abortion service or health care plan. And pass any abortion restriction that comes to his desk.

Why does PP need funding now that Obamacare exists and forces plans to cover birth control? And everyone must be covered? What is the justification for PP being funded in the age of Obamacare other than so they can funnel money to donations to Democrats?

You wise up. The millionaires that donate to Cruz’s pacs are pro-life conservatives or fighting for other causes they know he supports. Is Free Republic going to turn leftist if a Democrat donates 100 grand in the fundraising?

won't speak for Jim Robinson whom some of you are disparaging for turning this site into a liberal haven

No you don't speak for Jim Robinson, who I last saw had some pretty strong words of support for my candidate Cruz. Trumpets like you trying to paint us Cruz supporters as liberals, is beyond laughable.

Next time before making statements like that, you might want to check your own candidate's positions now, and through the past 20 years.

I’d not be surprised to find paid people posting here. Campaigns run many
various approaches within their endeavors.

I’m aware of one particular poster that was dormant for a few years that suddenly reappeared mid year
last year began posting nothing but articles favorable to one candidate. Now paid or not I have no idea
but do find it suspect. This poster has suddendly went quite on Feb. 7th.

We have been fighters for southern heritage front here for a long time. Here is another reason I won't back Trump. Check out his position on the CBF.

The quote is from June 22, 2015....

I think they should put it in the museum and let it go," Trump said of the flag during an appearance at his new golf course in the Washington, D.C. suburbs. "Respect whatever it is you have to respect, because it was a point in time, and put it in a museum. But I would take it down. Yes."

You couldn’t be more wrong on almost everything you say. Having “blind faith” in Trump’s flip-flops is as unjustified as Obama-maniacs thinking he’ll turn back the tides on the sea. And Roger Stone is your proof? The guy who posed nude in a swingers’ ad in the ‘90s and who Trump fired this year? THAT’S your reliable conservative source? REALLY?

We created the Tea Party and endorsed candidates like Ted Cruz because of our frustration with D.C. Trump had NOTHING to do with that movement. It’s now time to put a proven Tea Party agent of change who hates the D.C. establishment in the White House, and that’s Cruz.

We have plenty of businesses like Hobby Lobby and Chick-Fil-A who went to court to FIGHT for their rights to not give money to liberal causes or pro-abortion activity. Those are the true conservatives. Not someone who sold out his “values” to make some quick cash. If you believe those were his values, which is a laugh.

Trump is as powerful a brand and businessman as any. And despite everything he’s said, his business hasn’t closed up shop. He expects his kids to keep running it. So the idea that he “couldn’t” speak his mind before is ludicrous. You think something would have been done to him if he DIDN’T advocate for an assault weapons ban, a wealth tax on millionaires, partial-birth abortion, etc.? By his own admission, he gave donations to get what he wanted. You think someone would have stopped him over a minor political disagreement? Plus he simply could have KEPT QUIET about his views. He didn’t need to, unprompted, write in a book he wanted an AWB.

Even now, Trump is NOT for real conservative reform on many issues. He supports expanded NSA surveillance of phone calls, no reform on entitlements, no flat tax or fair tax or stopping deductions (a huge aspect of crony capitalism), Obama’s opening trade with Cuba, the government paying for universal health care for anyone who needs it, and letting back in “good” illegals.

Cruz is NOT politically correct. He is NOT establishment. He doesn’t stick his finger in the wind to make decisions. It’s actually Trump who does that. Even within the course of one speech you can see him adjusting his tone and statements to get more support from the crowd. Cruz is for every conservative thing Trump is, anti-Common Core, pro-military, pro-vets (is any candidate NOT pro vets?), and a WHOLE LOT MORE.

The immigration issue was brought up in the LAST primary. Gingrich said he was not for deportation, Romney said he was for self-deportation. They all went on record on the issue. Why in the world would it not have been brought up in this primary? But, hey, it’s been brought up now. Fine. If that’s all we got out of Trump, good. Let’s send him on his merry way now.

Trump is a temporary tool, a battering ram. Once the Federal doors are broken down I plan on looking for a real reformed minded conservative that IS PRO AMERICAN AND A NATIONALIST. Otherwise secession is the only option.
