Explaining Rubio
Freerepublic ^ | 02/02/2016 | bolobaby

I'm seeing a lot of questions about how Rubio got 23% of the vote in Iowa. The answer is surprisingly simple, although it is likely to inflame Trump supporters.

Trump has extremely high unfavorable ratings - possibly the highest of any presidential candidate since the metric began being measured. There are countless conservatives who simply *will not vote for him under any circumstances*. (Disclaimer: I am in this camp.)

Meanwhile, Trump supporters have been doing their best to discredit Cruz. Along with the establishment - who hates Cruz - it's a veritable piling-on. What the Trump supporters don't realize is that *attacking Cruz will not win Trump support*! Too many people will not vote for Trump, so if you discredit someone like Cruz, they start looking PAST Trump at the rest of the field. Who looks most palatable of the remaining candidates? Paul? Bush? Fiorina?

Why not Carson? Well, his debate performances were almost Stockdale-ish. OK, maybe that's too harsh. More like boring.

Meanwhile, Rubio did alright. So he looks like the next best choice.

Now, the people who will fall into this category are being swayed by specious attacks. They are unlikely to recognize that Rubio has been bought and sold by the GOPe - he's firmly in Boehner's and McConnell's pocket.

But there you have it.

How long before declarations of ‘I will never vote for Rubio’ will be met by ‘Hillary thanks you.’

I cannot argue in favor of Rubio - I’m a Cruz man.

I disagree. I think there are a lot more people who would be willing to cross over from Trump and vote for Cruz if he gets the nomination than vice versa.

The Trump supporters don’t realize that their candidate is a poison pill for some... in a MUCH higher percentage than Cruz is a poison pill to others.

The rule of thirds in Iowa Republican politics:

Yup. And that ends the discussion right there.

I read your post carefully. The anti Trump vote is in 2 parts. One is establishment GOPe voters who would not vote for Trump under any circumstances. They are Rubio all the way. The second is anti establishment voters who are dismayed by Trump’s brash persona. They do not go for Rubio under any circumstances. The first is a lost cause. The second is important because it is squishy. The Cruz and the Trump voters are the same group.

That does not apply to me, Voting Cruz March 1

Will support Republican nominee, even Trump.

Perhaps not Rubio!

Yes, he’s more likeable & has handled himself a lot better than Cruz or Trump. I like his foreign policy views & knowledge.

I think one of the things going against Rubio, as far as the general vote, is his looks. He looks very young, (and therefore inexperienced) even though he’s only 6 mos younger than Cruz.

If Hillary wins the nomination,(assured, by hook and crook) and the Republicans run Rubio, its going to be Hillary vs. Lazio all over again. I will predict that she’ll get 52 -53% of the vote against Rubio or Cruz. If Trump runs, he’s going to take the disgruntled Democrat votes and some of the minorities along with many of the Independents. If your goal is to stop Hillary with the Conservative vote, its not going to happen without the support of the outsiders. Conservatives alone will not win the election. Reagan didn’t win the election on conservative votes, some principles yes, but the voters liked the star and his ability to speak without talking down to the voters. Of course I see this through military eyes being defense minded and tend to side with Trump or Cruz. I see Rubio as the establishment candidate who will not upset the status quo in DC in spite of what he says. If you want to understand DC politics, all you have to do is look at the candidates. 16 Republicans and 2 Democrats.(that count) LOL, now is that the best of the best or what? If you ask me, the fix is in. Its all a show to keep the status quo.

The other thing is Rubio is likeable, articulate, passionate, and doesn’t seem prone to dirty campaign manipulation

Good analysis.

When Trump first announced, he wasn't my first choice, but I was certainly willing to vote for him In preference to any GOPe candidate.

But, after listening to Trump the past months, I would never vote for him. It has nothing to do with "better or worse" than some other candidate. Trump is unacceptable in an absolute sense.

If Trump gets the nomination, and I fear he will, I will write in a candidate. I won't vote for that vile man. And I'll bet that most voters agree with me, in spite of the noise from the minority who are Trump supporters.

I don’t want Rubio. I want Cruz.

Cruz wins in head-to-head polls against Hillary. Trump does not.

There are now 12 people in my inner circle of family and friends who have announced “Never Trump.”

Of course, one guy did say, “I’ll write in Rand Paul. He makes the most sense for a constitutional perspective.” Sigh.

Still, that guy *would* vote for Cruz OR Rubio, but not Trump.

I should point out to you that the vicious lies told by Team Cruz about Trump means there are more then a few Trump supporter that will never vote for Cruz now. So when Cruz that that after knocking off Trump (with lies) he’ll get the lion share of Trump supporters he is smokin dupe.

I stated that Rubio doesn't seem prone to dirty campaign manipulation. My indirect underlying dig is that Cruz is. The article you referred be to speaks of Cruz campaign dirty tricks.

What you referred me to is perhaps as bad as "Shamegate" if it's true, and in combination with it, is appalling. If spreading the lie about Dr. Carson dropping out was coordinated by the campaign, the Cruz campaign lacks a right vs wrong compass. It's "tricky dick" politics.

JMHO
