Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) backpedaled Wednesday after joking that, among the current Republican presidential field, he's considering backing Donald Trump for the nomination.
"Look, we've gotten along fine," the Democratic leader told reporters. "With that bunch of people running, I'm kind of pulling for him."
Reid made the remark after the GOP front-runner touted his ability to work with top Democrats in Congress, including House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), expected to be the next Senate Democratic leader. Asked about Trump's statement, Reid added, "Oh, I remember the good old days when he did a fundraiser or two for me."
Reid quickly walked back his comments, apologizing for joking about supporting Trump - whom he called a "hateful demagogue who will do immeasurable damage to our country."
"There's some things I shouldn't joke about," he said from the Senate floor. "The danger of a Donald Trump candidacy to our country is not a joke."
Conservatives, including Trump's top rival in the upcoming Iowa caucuses, Ted Cruz, have been critical of the real estate mogul's apparent willingness to negotiate with Democrats.
Trump is Reid’s kind of guy.
I’m sure Trunp has greased Reid’s palm a few times in the casino biz. They get along fine.
I know it’d difficult for you to believe but sometimes things ARE as they appear.
‘Kinda pulling for Trump’ means Harry will stick a slightly shorter knife in his back.
They're all big government operators. That's why they get along. That's why Trump donated to the Clintons. That's why he backed De Blasio. With Trump you'll get endless "deals" with Reid and Pelosi.
Peas in a pod.
The only thing Reids pulling is his weenie...
You are 100% correct, and Lib-Lickers put it best: They have changed their tune quite drastically from just a few months ago, now that they realize he's going to win.
A deal to a republican has smeant giving everything democrats want in exchange for one or two compliments from a democrat during an MSNBC interview.
Ditto this
++++
Did you read the full quote? Reid is saying that he personally finds Trump more likeable, but is totally opposed to his policies.
Reid’s comments should be ignored. He’s been pulling something alright. He wears contact lenses.
The US is in a mess....we're way down that slippery slope to the trash heap of failed civilizations. Trump gets it. He's seen all that's bad that has happened since our age group grew up in the 1950s and 1960s. In the interim, he's had a successful career building beautiful things and being a loving and dedicated father and grandfather. My take from all that....Trump really does want to "Make America Great Again".
To do that, we all have to agree on that goal, even though we have different definitions of what "Great" means and even when we agree on that, how to get there. We need someone who can prioritize and persuade others. We need someone who knows which things cannot be compromised.
That's Trump. We'll never save the nation with someone everybody who is involved in governing despises or with someone who sells out to the highest bidder before they even unpack in DC.
Trump is that unlikely hero that occurs at critical times in history. Someone who can change the course of things, by sheer force of will. Who comes to mind? Lech Walesa, Eva Peron, Caesar Chavez, MLK, Ghandi. We're staring at a real opportunity, and folks will throw it away for their political agenda. What's the point of choosing a pol to undo the mess we're in?
No thank you. Fascism and national bankruptcy are not things to which I aspire.
I’m not saying I agree with their philosophies. I’m saying they are unlikely heroes and patriots who came along when their people needed a leader and they changed the course of things.
This is misdirection. Reid knows how much we loathe him.
Rather glaringly obvious, isn't it?
It amazes me how many people fall for this stuff.
"Don't look now, but while our best conservative is running a political campaign, Trump is leading a rebellion. Not as a liberal or a conservative politician, but as a successful red-blooded, can-do American capitalist.", Jim Robinson
Very revealing. So Reid likes Trump and wants him nominated. And yet he’s anti-Establishment? Whatever!
