I talked to Rodney S. Taylor, Chief Engineer, at the Shot Show in Las Vegas. He said that the .22 ammunition is the Company's mainstay, by far the majority of the ammunition that they produce. Much of the Ammunition goes to the Central and South America markets. Aquila made the decision to significantly increase production a couple of years ago. Their machinery is state of the art, an almost completely automated, top of the line, process. Last year, in 2015, they increased their production by close to 30%, producing somewhat less than a billion rounds of ammunition. I recall a figure being mentioned of about $2 million dollars being invested in .22 rimfire production last year.

“As a side note, theres some PCPs out there that are just down right scary accurate”
PCP? I’ve heard about that stuff, very nasty. I guess if you are on it, a single shot air rifle gives the family and neighbors a chance to rush you before you can reload once you’ve torched off that one shot.
But then you are all strong like Rodney King and just shake em right off.
Tough call.
There are some excellent custom makers who produce air rifles capable of taking down big game, but I don’t know much about it.
Mr. niteowl77
That looks like a fun little rifle. And you are aware aren’t you, that air rifle people are sorta like a cult?
Now, that said, where do you fall on 177 vs 22 in these modern high velocity air rifles?
True, but it all depends on philosophy. To me a handgun is for carry, and since I would never carry a .22, I don’t need a .22 pistol. For a rifle, if I need it for some serious purpose, I would definitely go for a bigger caliber than .22 as well. So in my situation that puts .22’s in the “squirrels and rabbits and tin cans” categories, all of which can be covered by an airgun.
I have one of those jewels.
When I go to the range (stay proficient with two pistols, stay proficient with 3 rifles) I always take the little Marlin.
I'll run 100 rounds through it with open sights at 50yds while practicing concentration and breathing.
I love that little rifle.
Why settle with a single shot when you can have one of these?
GIANT-X2 (semi auto)
I don't have a preference, they're both fun to shoot. I have two break barrels, one being the Beeman I posted, a Stoeger in a .177 and a Walther Nighthawk .177 semi-auto CO2 pistol.......
The .177 I would use if I were to shoot junk birds such as sparrows or starlings but for rabbits and squirrels I would use the .22.
PCP's are works of art and at 50 yards they have single hole accuracy. Unfortunately they are expensive as hell as are the accessories needed to shoot them.
You wanna hear creepy?
It’s so cold I applied butter to my thighs. Now I have beautiful buttery thighs.
LOL! I got mine cheap around ‘81 when an acquaintance needed the cash. Good investment as far as I was concerned. It shakes and rattles but it rocks and rolls. The hard part was finding spare mags for it. And it still is. I managed to gather 4.
IF I win the lottery that Giant X-2 would make a nice addition to the family.
True, for the most part. I really like the Chinese copies of the old Crosman 180 CO2 rifles, though - sold under the names QB77 and QB78. Those rifles are the Ruger 10/22s of the air gun world now, with lots of aftermarket accessories and custom parts. Real wooden stocks, real metal barrels and receivers - like the 1960s all over again.
The Beeman product line really got pared down after Robert Beeman sold the company in the '90s. How the best products of that genre ended up under the banner of Marksman air guns (maker of some real junk) defies comprehension. I still have a copy of the last "real" Beeman catalog around here somewhere.
There's this .50 Cal Dragon Slayer by Pyramid Air........
That’s it. Great little rifle for a 12 year old to take on day hikes.
Another fan of the .38 Super here. Haven’t tried the Aquila ammo, but like the Cor Bon for a defense load.
Had several Colts in the chambering, but they were fussy about ammo. Finally found a Sig P220 that feeds everything. Only problem is the magazines are hard to find.
Yes there are but a good 22rf is normally cheaper
Glad to hear that Aguila is stepping up production. I was happy to see that they’re listing several new loadings in 5mm Remingtom Magnum Rimfire, which was a dead caliber for twenty years. They have a number of interesting items listed under “Special Products”.
Nope, wasn't aware of that. Why would you even bring it up?
where do you fall on 177 vs 22 in these modern high velocity air rifles?
So just where do YOU fall on .177 vs. .22? And what's Your preference, PCP, break barrel, CO2 or the standard old pump bb gun?
