Last week, Walmart dropped a bombshell on the retail world with the announcement it was closing 269 stores worldwide, including 154 in the U.S. The vast majority being shuttered in the U.S. are Walmart Express stores -- the company's tiniest retail locations, which ultimately proved unprofitable for the big box-focused giant.
Walmart isn't wasting any time in shutting the stores down. The full list of where and when stores are being closed can be found here, and it shows that the vast majority will close their doors on Thursday, Jan. 28.

Be warned it could be dicey inside the stores depending where they are.
They were going after the Dollar General market.
Dollar General can literally open a new store or close an unprofitable one in a single day.

Dollar Tree is the one that’s eating everyone’s lunch.
Dollar General are basically mini-Walmarts. Dollar Tree has a lot of bargains, but they don’t carry clothing or a lot of other things.
Why do I need to spend $10 for a shower curtain when I can get it at Dollar Tree for a buck and tax?
yep, several in the Memphis area are only gun carry zones. High crime can’t even walk across the parking lot safe.
Even in small towns..are getting bad.
Trouble is they are mostly the go to places to shop when you live rural. Our closest Walmart is 22 miles round trip. They hurt themselves when they shut down layaway and fabric departments. Then they started catering to the 30 and under crowd with cheap made chinese junk.
When the TG&Y closed in Dodge City, KS, they reduced everything by a percentage then regularly dropped it until everything was gone.
When they got down to everything at 30% of regular, I decided to stop by.
Basically everything in the store was gone that I wanted except I stopped by the sporting goods counter and there was several hundred boxes of Remington Express .22LR.
I could only guess that some employee had hidden it in back with hopes of bringing it out and letting a friend buy it. Maybe the manager found it and brought it out anyway.
It just did not make sense for a desirable product to have made it to 70% off.
Anyway I put $200 worth on a credit card and had something like 500 boxes. It took me several trips to my pickup to haul it all out.

Pure unadulterated Walmart hate. Walmart planned to open something like six stores in DC. They were in the process of building the first three when the DC government tried to screw them over by a very targeted minimum wage increase. DC initially backed off and Walmart got the first three stores in gentrified areas open. Now DC is playing minimum wage games again and Walmart has cancelled the other three stores. Which were in economically depressed areas. One of which had ready seen a bunch of local businesses and residential buildings razed to provide the space.
Milloy’s piece was a classic Left wing lashing out at big business for not being willing to take massive losses for the “greater good” (as defined by Liberals). Its a very good and enlightening read, as is the comments section.
That is like cleaning products, I can buy dishwasher soap for a Buck, bleach, brooms, dust pans, and containers which cost much more at Walmart or any other place, even Dollar General or Family Dollar are higher on those items. Some are name brands.
I can’t go to Walmart and buy shoes, they don’t carry my small size 5.
With a fixed income even the Salvation Army is now a shopping place for clothes. Have gotten some big names still with the tags on them for a small fraction of retail cost in a named store.
Unless the Navy Exchange has really marked the clothes down, you can’t afford them as they are basically the cost you find at Macy or Dillard’s minus the sales tax. $200 for a small cloth Vera Wang wallet is outrageous. And outside my ability to buy.
And I Coupon a lot so I can stretch the budget. Even that 10% discount saves the sales tax at Lowe’s because we are Retired Military. And I do price match.

There are 5 W-Ms and a Sam’s Club within an 8 mile radius of my house and I don’t live in a big city.
Much of the appeal is that you can get better than Wal-Mart pricing for a limited number of key items and don't have that quarter mile walk from the parking lot to the store, almost as far to go to the back of the store to get what you need and can be through a check-out line in 5-8 minutes tops. The managers at two of these places know me by name and I'll often kid them with a friendly "What are we running here, Wal-Mart?" if there are more than about three people in line and they don't call another checker quickly enough.
Well that is not the case in a lot of areas. I remember the big fight to keep the fabric departments open. Many in real rural areas in our western states had to drive an hr 1 way to reach a Walmart.
We are in a part of Tipton Co, TN adjacent to Memphis, and the 2 nearest Walmart’s are in Millington, TN..Shelby Co, or Covington, TN, Tipton county, about equal distances. Ditto goes for Lowe’s which is in Millington, and the small Home Depot in Covington.
Our shopping consist of 1 decent grocery store..Kroger’s, a higher cost grocery store that stinks, fast food joints, Dollar Gen, Family Dollar and Fred’s or nail salons. We have 1 GP, 1 Dentist, 1 Pediatrician, 1 Internist who won’t write pain scripts. And a Rehab center.
To see a good doctor or hospital you go into Memphis. Good luck choosing, stay away from the only Public hospital the MED which is the welfare/illegals doctors office. Now if you need a NIC U or Trauma center that is first rate that is where you go for a tristate, tricounty radius. The biggest children’s hospital is also in Memphis. As well as ST Jude’s Children’s Cancer Hospital. But since the other states don’t want to pay their share of the welfare crowd needing the Trauma or NIC U, the MED is always short of funds and threatening to shut down.
Tiny towns just don’t have a lot of choices. Those that are lucky have a Walmart super center. But most are like my section of Tipton Co. Once you cross that Shelby Co line your car and home owner’s insurance drops drastically it’s the trade off for moving away from the crime and corruption.
I don’t find Dollar General’s prices as low, and they are manned by skeleton crews; I only go to one nearby if I need one thing on short notice. I’ve never see a “Wal-Mart Express”, but Dollar General certainly isn’t competing with regular Wal-Marts.

While Wal-Mart might be desperately needed in poor areas, the crime is too much. Wal-Mart opened on the outskirts of my town, in a swampy area between Newark and Jersey City; the cops are there a LOT. I believe this Wal-Mart is one that is being scaled back from 24 hours.
They are usually in small towns with no Walmarts.
