One last word on the Oscers. So black actors now expect a quota system to be implemented in the Academy Awards just like in the Police force, Fire department, colleges, federal hiring, and civil industry. That resulted in many cases of promotion and award based on color not performance. Standards had to be lowered to "level the playing field". Now and forever when the Academy Award is given we will all wonder if it was for the best in the industry or for meeting some implied quota.
I think the Oscars are a casualty of political correctness and will never recover.
The President of AMPAS is black.
The Producer of this year’s telecast is black.
The host of this year’s telecast is black.
Let’s see how those the demand PC from us deal with it up front...they made their bed now lay in it.
Much of AMPAS is made of technicians. Film editors, sound editors, cameramen. It’s not as left wing as you may think.
I can appreciate their ire that “their” people were overlooked. I’ve been boycotting the oscars for years because “my” people - conservatives - are always overlooked.
I quit watching the PC Oscars decades ago.
The Oscars are a casualty of the Academy’s own long known preferences for actors that “stretch” by playing “tragic” characters. “Tragic” characters in Hollywood being defined as gay characters that wind up dead, those physical and mental disabilities, and people that “fight the power” usually to wind up dead. All of the rest of this builds from that. The Oscars highly predictable and generally pathetic preferences have been known, documented, and mocked on comedy websites for a long time. For whatever reason black actors haven’t been getting these “tragic” roles lately, which is causing non-comedians to notice the serious problems the award has. This actually could save the Oscars, if they think it through and notice the root problem. Or they won’t and the Oscars will just switch to a new brand of dumb.
Why not just make good movies for African Americans? It is funny how the Emmy’s don’t have this problem. Maybe because television makes quality stuff for African Americans. Of course I still want to know the stats for the NAACP awards......what are the percentages of Whites that get nominated and shutter....win?
I didn't count the number of blacks in each film. I didn't go the the theater to see any "black" films. I saw what I wanted to see.
My point is that to force diversity on people will do nothing but kill good films.
The black-white thing always trying to make whites feel guilty is sickening.
I bet every ant infestation in the ground under my lawn has some kind of a "top ant" award. I care as much about the ant that gets that award as I do about the person who gets the "best actor" award at the Oscars.
If I could, I would put a giant container of boric acid dissolved in high-fructose corn syrup right outside the entrance to the... whatever they call it this month. The Dolby Theater.
But Thomas Dolby was a white guy! Ray Dolby was too! How long will that naming choice last?
Aw they’re just PO’d because the LGBT crowd has been having their way on TV and the movies. Every “actor” who is anyone has to be an LGBTCFDRZ in SOMETHING and get an award for it. And just as Empire hit the air!! OMG! The utter insult of it all. Only quotas will do.
The awards have been corrupt PC agenda BS for years.
The OSCARS stopped being worth the watching time when I (and millions, too) realized they had NOT seen a single nominated for anything movie.
Many years ago, newspapers (remember them?) printed actual ballots on Oscar Day, so you could vote for your favorites to compare with the pros, because you had seen EVERY nominated film. Lots of years ago.
Because in general, [critical/arsty] Hollywood doesn’t now, and never has understood several of the most popular genres: Science Fiction, Action, and Horror. Has no understanding of them at all. Not new. When Westerns were the “Big Thing” Hollywood didn’t get Westerns, either.
:: always trying to make whites feel guilty is sickening ::
It would more rightly be described as making blacks feel they have “power” in the process; it is also known as “patronization” or, as Bush43 said it so well, “the low expectations of bigotry”.
Think about how many “MLKJ Avenues” there are in US cities; why?
Even outside of their general hatred for “genre” the Oscars have a long history of skipping over movies that lack that “tragic” touch. Except of course in the make-up awards, not the ones for make-up, the ones to make-up for the fact that they didn’t give an award for some previous work they’ve finally realized was awesome, so have it for this year’s much less interesting work. Oscar votes are so convoluted, but amazingly predictable.
“Now and forever when the Academy Award is given we will all wonder if it was for the best in the industry or for meeting some implied quota.”
The money quote, IMO. Imagine how you would feel if you are having surgery and you see your chest cutter is a black guy. And, as you slip in sleep you think “was he top of his class or was he the last black accepted into med school that year?”
That concept applies to far too many occupations today.
