Air Force apologizes for advertising a 'fun shoot' at range on Martin Luther King Day using image of murdered civil rights leader
- The controversial poster advertised a skeet shoot at an Air Force base in Georgia
- The flyer promised attendees would get 'two rounds and lunch' for $20 and featured a picture of Martin Luther King, Jr.
- Air Force officials issued a statement apologizing for the 'insensitive' flyer
Officials at an Air Force base in Georgia drew criticism on Thursday after posting controversial flyers advertising a 'Martin Luther King, Jr. fun shoot' featuring a picture of the civil rights leader, who was gunned down in 1968.
The flyers announced a gathering at the Robins Air Force Base Skeet Club scheduled for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. For $20, the poster promised, attendees would get 'two rounds and lunch.'
The Air Force base, which is located in the town of Warner Robins in central Georgia, released a statement on Thursday apologizing for the poster, calling it 'inappropriate' and an 'honest mistake.'
'We didn't make the flyer,' Leroy Minus told the newspaper. 'We squared it away. We got rid of the picture.'
In the conclusion of the Air Force base's statement officials said they 'hold the legacy of Dr. King in the highest regard.'

Give me a break....it’s not like they were shooting at the pocture. What is the big deal? Fun is now verboten?
I don’t think holding the event would have been a mistake, just that the poster shown was poorly designed.
As someone suggested above, they could have had a Lee-Jackson Day event. That was a holiday when I was a girl in Virginia.
Ten or fifteen years ago there was a (real) photo circulating, showing a sign on the wall of a drug store, wishing all African-American patrons well on MLK Day—taped to the wall right over a display of bags of cotton balls.
For the last several years, a few friends and I open a bottle of Rebel Yell bourbon, and raise glasses to Marse Robert. It’s all we can do in the face of the despicable revisionism that’s occurring these days.
At $10 a round, they ought to be at least 20mm rounds, even if it is MLK on the target.
Just what we need.....a sensitive Air Force. That’ll really scare our enemies.....
