With enough warning, the states near Yellowstone could be evacuated, which would largely avoid a tremendous loss of life caused by the downpour of ash, the scientists said. But that's just in the short term; the aftermath would be the rub. For several days, ash would hang in the air, making it difficult to breathe. And that blanket of ash covering the country would smother vegetation and pollute the water supply, quickly leading to a nationwide food crisis. "A lot of people would perish," said Stephen Self, director of the Volcano Dynamics Group at the Open University in the U.K. He envisions American refugees lining up at the Mexican border.
...inhospitable conditions would persist in the midwestern U.S. for about a decade. "The records show that [new] vegetation starts to take hold about 10 years after supereruptions. It depends on how much rainfall the area receives, as rainfall is the main way you clear ash off the land..."
Based on the new models, the scientists now think the vast majority of Earth's species would weather a Yellowstone supereruption just fine (except, of course, for those knocked out due to proximity of the initial blast). They don't see any evidence in the geologic record of mass extinctions coinciding with supereruptions, and they don't predict extinctions to result from such geologic events in the future.

Yellowstone's last full-scale outburst occurred 640,000 years ago, and the ones before that occurred 1.3 million and 2.1 million years ago â but each of these events was a tad smaller than the one before it. This geologic hotspot could be growing cold. Or it might have one last hurrah.

What will happen?
All of your worries will either vaporize or shrink to non-existence compared to your new worries.
*sigh*...
Well one thing we do know: Women, children and minorities will be hardest hit.
These Yellowstone Supervolcano threads come up on a regular basis.
The biggest reason seems to be that new posters, cruising the interwebbies, run into links about it while searching for something else.
It must be a link on some popular page because this is the second day someone has posted a new thread with this old article.
That’s why we need to confiscate all guns now.

Actually, the reason it hasn’t erupted is because of FRACKING.
Ooooooo! Something new.
Volcanic winter.
Oh crap, like we don’t already have enough to worry about.
It could be a brand new excuse for FReepers that have heretofore suffered canoeing accidents with their favorite firearms.
“Dang it! My gun collection was on loan to the Yellowstone folks.”
I will either die quickly or die slowly as I live in Denver Colorado.
Supposing my roof doesn’t cave in from the 2-3ft of volcanic ash on it and the air isn’t poisonous and it doesn’t set my house on fire, I can probably last 6-10 months. Which may be enough time for Nature to somewhat recover.
I plan to stay in my house and sleep most of that 6-8 months eating small portions and drinking the bare minimum.
So i could survive, but probability is low.
I guess no one would bitch if I lit up a cigar in public, then.
Well for starters muslims and illegal immigrants will race to leave the country.
So it cannot be all that bad.
What if reality implodes into nothing?
I think it already has.
I must have been sleeping or something.
It would be far more likely for several communist/terrorist nations to hit western Europe with nukes.
If it does erupt, it will be Bush’s fault.
Genesis 8:22:
22 While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.”
These things gotta happen every five million years or so, ten million years. Helps to get rid of the bad blood.
“The initial blast” that stopped me there - super volcanoes may or may not just give one blast and are spent. They could and have erupted for days, week, months, years and twice for over a century.
It just depends on the size of the magma chamber, how much the preasure will push out, and how long it takes for it to get out. Previous eruptions may or may not be indicators of future eruption patterns. Take science here with the entire salt shaker.
The last super volcano eruption wiped out most of the human race in 74000 BC ... with modern interdependent tech, the deaths from the effects of the volcano itself could be only a small part of the ones from starvation, disease, thirst, murder, freezing, heat stroke.
