Happy New Year.
I promise there will be some actual 160-year-old information to present later on, but for now let us continue catching up on . . .

Going into this project I felt the parallels might be a little too cute and easy. But the more I learn about the pro-slavery arguments and the Dred Scott decision the more I realize the parallels with the “pro-choice” movement and Roe v Wade are numerous and on point.

That, my friend, is among the most inspiring two pages I have every in my life read.
“A man without force is without the essential dignity of humanity.”
What an amazing truth.

New tagline ....
Perhaps the best tagline I’ve ever had...

“Hereditary bondsmen! Know ye not
Who would be free themselves must strike the blow?
By their right arms the conquest must be wrought?
Will Gaul or Muscovite redress ye? No!
True, they may lay your proud despoilers low,
But not for you will Freedom’s altars flame.
Shades of the Helots! triumph o’er thy foe!
Greece! change thy lords, thy state is still the same;
Thy glorious day is o’er, but not thine years of shame.”
Lord Byron

This is fascinating reading. That was my impression when I started reading it and why I decided to serialize it here. I have read about slavery in historic accounts and seen it portrayed in movies and on television, but reading a first-person account like this gives it a whole new level of impact. Even it it describes events from many years before the time we are supposedly focusing on (1856) it will provide extra meaning to those "current" events as we come to them.

“With the exception of Brown”s death, comparative quiet prevailed during the January 15 election.”
I wonder if Cook would agree with this statement had he lived? At least this reveals the slant of Nicole Etchenson.

I don’t get “comparative quiet” at all. It sounds a violent mob scene from start to finish.

Makes you wonder how much worse does it get if that qualifies as “comparative quiet”.
