This could be a useful analysis, if the screenwriter felt this way and made an effort to express this viewpoint on society’s decline.
However, it is far more likely that the character is the way he is because of bad writing and someone’s desire for a certain character arc, whether or not such an arc made any sense.

With parents as busy as Leia & Hans its easy to see why the son got interested in the dark side. It is powerful while the parents were weak.
I haven’t seen it, nor intend to until it’s on netflix or $4.99 in the bargain DVD bin, but my question is this. The original Death Star was the size of a small moon. The new one is the size of the planet. Why isn’t it called the Death...Supernova? Or Death Globular Cluster? Something bigger?

The whole movie suffered from a lack of masculinity.
Why? Because he had bad parents. The mom happily was a well paid sexy tart the last time we saw her and now bitches people wanted about 1/4 less of her on screen 32 years later, and dad apears to have hardly been around, possibly doing his best to stay away from mom.
