so ban radios in vehicles
Headphones have been illegal while driving in cars for decades and ear buds, if both are used should be illegal also, it’s tough enough to hear a siren in modern cars without someone basicly making themselves deaf plugging both ears.
A car radio is not in effect earplugs, earbuds and headphones are.
A number of people have been mauled or killed by bears and wolves in Alaska in recent years. The one thing they had in common was they were wearing headphones or ear buds. When I’m out in the wild, my head is on a swivel and I never have anything in my ears. It’s not just an urban thing.
Depends on the earbuds, I have worn some that allow “pass through sound” meaning even with them in as long as the volume is not too loud it is is just like wearing a stocking cap over your ears in regards to sounds outside of the car, that being said if I need to listen to talk radio from my cell phone in the car I wear only one in the ear that is towards the center of the car.
Headphones completely cut off sensory information from your environment. Car radios don’t.
I don’t have a clue as to why they need to pass a law on this, it should be common sense. When I used earphones, when I biked, I didn’t put them over my ears so I could still be aware of what was happening around me.
“I donât have a clue as to why they need to pass a law on this, it should be common sense.”
I have seen it more than a couple of times here. Most probably they have sh*tty car sound system and need to go louder but cant upgrade theirs. Mine I crank up loud I sometimes miss the ambulance behind me so it will be worse if morons use earbuds.
The only time I use my earphones is when I’m on the train. Simply put, it’s a long ride and I don’t want to hear you beside me talking to your other pal about your stupid problems when I have my own..
Good!
People have too much freedom.
** ducking **
Problem is the people who don’t have quality earbuds that put other drivers and emergency vehicles at risk, and how do you tell if someone is using a pass through pair or no from a distance? Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t get it, why not just listen to the radio in the car? Personally I can’t even wear a Bluetooth headset because I am all but deaf in one ear and won’t risk not hearing a siren or horn.
Here in Houston there were a lot of women wearing earphones and earbuds while skating and jogging. Not being aware of their surroundings, they made an easy mark for predatory creepazoids.
“When I used earphones, when I biked, I didn’t put them over my ears so I could still be aware of what was happening around me.”
Same here. When I wore headphones professionally I kept them a little forward of totally covering my ears. I had to maintain situational awareness - phones, alarms, people yelling for me, etc. I’m still part-deaf, but since I’ve retired it’s getting better.
Why? I thought headphones were preferred to phone.
As a regular bicyclist, I am horrified when I see others on their bikes with large headphones (over-the-ear type) riding along. Stupid but what can you do, other than laws like this? It is the other people that they can harm that the law is for, not them!
Agree. As far as I know there isn’t a ban on deaf people driving so the legal reason for banning them couldn’t be not being about to ‘hear’ traffic. And as you pointed out, if it is distraction, then they would have to ban radios also. Society all too often reacts rather than think.
Have to totally agree with you, especially as they are being played on high volume.
As a double hearing aid wearer I can’t even turn the radio on and drive. It is 1 a distraction, 2 you can’t hear anything outside the car well, even with the radio off.
My biggest gripe is those side air bags, for those of us who have had Cataract surgery we have NO Peripheral vision. Even with glasses you have to really turn your head which requires you to take your eyes off what is in front of you to check your side mirrors. I’d like to see camera’s put in side mirrors when you put your turn signal on.
I quit driving at night 15 yrs ago, and stopped driving the free/express way 10 years ago. Can’t see to change lanes, and with 6 lanes that is a big issue. Especially in Memphis where you have Kamikaze drivers with no driver’s license and no insurance.
....And Open Carry here in TEXAS. :)
IMO I think too many liberals and stupid people expect the government to legislate "common sense". Hence idiotic stuff like this.
