t was Downton Abbey’s Christmas special and its last ever episode – a potent combination we knew would guarantee a happy ending.

In fact there were dozens of them with everyone living happily ever after, even Edith.

Writer Julian Fellowes bowed out swathing every scene with even more cascading violins than usual and enough syrupy, soapy, sentimentality to make the most devoted fan gag.

“Well, I want to know if Robert got a new dog in Season 6.”

I hate that they killed off Isis.

Well, in real years (according to the story timeline) Isis was pretty old. My daughter noticed it first. Whe asked, “How old is that dog, anyway?” By her calculation Isis was already 14 or 15.

I’ll tell you how bad it was ... <<< SPOILER ALERT!!! >>>

<<< SPOILER ALERT!!! >>>
<<< SPOILER ALERT!!! >>>
<<< SPOILER ALERT!!! >>>

Daisy found love, Barrow found respect, Molesly fulfilled his life-long dream, and Lady Crawley married the man she loved, but only because he was dying, except then he wasn’t.

In “Upstairs, Downstairs,” at least the misery didn’t abate just because the series was ending. In fact, the suffering and sadness escalated all the way to the end!
