After years of staggering hype, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens†opened to nearly-unanimous positive reviews and the biggest opening of any film ever. Dozens of laudatory reviews are praising it as a worthy successor to the Original Trilogy.

Ford was not going to do another movie after this.
Well episode vi - ewok adventure - really destroyed the second half of a good first half. At the end it was like watching a muppet movie song.
I saw the film today as well and agree with what you posted. It was a good film. I personally liked the “force” dying to myth (so to speak) and this “awakening” and the fight for balance (an ongoing thing theme). It was a very fast moving film but had a good balance of action and story. Well worth the price of admission (note: I chose to see the 2D film first; going back to try the 3D after Christmas).
All said, I’m very happy with what JJ has done. I hope they make a bundle. To all the naysayers, it is a fictional MOVIE. Take a two hour break from the shit reality we HAVE to live in and just enjoy some down time..

my post wasn’t meant to be a criticism of the movie criticism. Just a warning to those who’ve read the Star Wars books who may think the movie will have elements directly from them.

I take it you didn’t get the memo: after Disney bought Lucasfilms and gained the rights to Star Wars, the entire Expanded Universe was essentially declared non-canon (they’re now part of the line called ‘Star Wars Legends’ IIRC) so that they wouldn’t be restricted in the new media properties they were developing (aka the movies, cartoon shows, etc).
So basically, the old Expanded Universe is now an alternate universe. Can’t exactly blame J.J. Abrams for something Disney decided to do.

No she isn’t. People with Force powers are innately good at stuff. How much time had Luke spent in an X-Wing? And yet he could fly in that trench at high speed and bob and weave and never crack up on the side like we saw multiple almost certainly more experienced (since it’s not possible to be less experienced) pilots. He was also better on the Falcon’s canons than Han. Roll that through your head, better than Han with the guns on Han’s ship. Speaking of better than Han, ever notice Leia is a better shot than Han?
We saw similar with Anakin in the prequels. You forget, Anakin didn’t just have quick reflexes, he could fly ANYTHING, and shoot ANYTHING, better than the people paid to do so. People with Force powers are innately good at everything they do.
Rey isn’t done yet. Now she’s found Luke, who’s going to be teaching her, and (I’m willing to bet money) is going to turn out to be her father. It’s not girl power, it’s Force power. She’s not a Mary Sue, she’s a Skywalker.
Imagine that. :)

We understand that. However, we have been waiting since 1983 for a sequel to ROTJ. Was it too much to ask for a movie that wasn't overcomplicated, unimaginative, and just made sense?
Operative word there: MASTER. Cannon also shows people strong in the Force just plain get a lot of lucky breaks. Remember, when push comes to shove Force power is basically wish fulfillment, people strong in the Force wish something to happen and it does. They wish to cloud people’s minds, they wish lightening to come out of their fingers, they wish to jump really high, they wish that thing to come here, they wish for a soft landing after they jump out of a speeder at high altitude, and it happens. Most of Jedi training, as we’ve seen, is unlearning self doubt, and learning selflessness. Because those are the big problems they run into, doubt stops the mastery, and selfishness leads to the Dark Side. Outside of that we’ve seen over and over (especially if you watch the 2 animated series which are cannon) that even the youngest Padawan can do some pretty far out stuff. Because they’re strong in the Force, and the Force is wish fulfillment, and little kids are really good at wishing.
Luke was NOT flying anything close to an X-Wing at anything near the speed of an X-Wing in anything as small as the Deathstar trench, and he was NOT nailing womprats at that speed, and ESPECIALLY NOT doing it WITH HIS EYES CLOSED.
Anakin’s problems are the big 2 I mentioned already. He’s crippled with self doubt, and he’s a self little #$%^&. He’s actually probably stronger in the Force in 1 than 2, because in 1 he’s having fun and fulfilling wishes, and in 2 he’s a moody teenager bent on self sabotage.
Rey has everything Luke had, plus a lack of stable home. Plenty of experience on the junkyard planet flying random crap. And fixing random crap. And fighting random people. And struggling to stay alive. Plus of course Skywalker level Force powers that let things just happen for them. She doesn’t break ANY of the canon. You say Luke pulled his big first Force thing because Ben was whispering in his ear, well guess WHO ELSE had Ben whispering in their ear:

She’s a Skywalker, and she’s shown no more or less super power than Luke, Anakin, or Leia (or Ashoka, or Ezra). How she does things is pretty typical of people strong in the Force. And really pretty typical of main characters from the “hyper competent” section of fiction telling. Really she’s no more competent than your typical Trek main cast member either. That school of fiction telling doesn’t allow uncontested failure. And it goes way back, even further than the Flash Gordon serial George originally ripped off.
A late middle aged sea caption has an affair with a barely legal innocent nun who he hired as his nanny. Hmm.....
