I take it you didn’t get the memo: after Disney bought Lucasfilms and gained the rights to Star Wars, the entire Expanded Universe was essentially declared non-canon (they’re now part of the line called ‘Star Wars Legends’ IIRC) so that they wouldn’t be restricted in the new media properties they were developing (aka the movies, cartoon shows, etc).

So basically, the old Expanded Universe is now an alternate universe. Can’t exactly blame J.J. Abrams for something Disney decided to do.

J.J. Abrams blew up the planet Vulcan in Star Trek. If he does another Star Trek movie he will blow up Earth.
