Microsoft HoloLens Previews Available At NYC, Access by appointment to developers only

Good news for those who want a hands-on preview of the Microsoft HoloLens augmented reality headset - the company's New York City store is offering these immersive previews. Bad news - these previews are appointment-only, and are only open to developers, not regular consumers.

Developers interested in working on HoloLens projects can pay $3,000 for Microsoft's Development Edition build. But first, Microsoft wants developers to give HoloLens a bit of a test drive before committing to that premium amount of money. The thing, however, is that you'll have to schedule an appointment if you're an interested developer, and that there are hundreds of devs already on the waitlist. And that, according to a Microsoft spokesman, is in the New York metro alone.

"It's because of this overwhelming reception that we're eager to open the first ongoing HoloLens experience showcase for developers at the Microsoft Flagship Store in New York," explained Microsoft Operating System Group technical fellow Alex Kipman in a statement. "Now, developers who have been wanting to try HoloLens will have the chance to experience the world's first fully untethered holographic computer, powered by Windows 10, for themselves." Appointments can now be scheduled at the HoloLens Events Website, though, as Kipman warned, the waiting list seems to be very, very long and expected to grow longer ahead of the 2016 previews.

The Microsoft flagship store offering the previews is located in a rather tony part of town, on Fifth Avenue between 53rd and 54th Streets and amid several luxury stores. Not surprisingly, that's also the area where Apple's flagship store is located - yes, that same store with the glass cube entrance.

I got a fun little Windows 10 message today:

YOUR FILES ARE WERE YOU LEFT THEM

I was expecting the next message to be something like "to access them, send $100 to PayPal account 12345"

And the computer did not respond to any keys. Fortunately, my wife had this happen to her last week and told me after a little while Windows 10 boots OK.

Thanks, MS, for scaring the crap out of me.

Mary Jo Foley had a nice write up here.

A tour of sorts on last week’s Windows Weekly podcast too.

The “gun slot” field of view still bugs me though. Maybe the developers can work it out.

Yeah, my boss and I both got that after the Windows 10 upgrade.

We're like, "WTF? Why is it important that you tell us that? What did you do???"

Better than my options. I have a desktop that got infected with a virus somehow. During my efforts to get rid of it I did something and now the OS thinks it is a pirated copy. I eventually just gave up and bought Windows 8 to install and get rid of the virus. The installation program gives me the options of erasing all the applications I have installed, and erasing the entire filesystem. It won’t preserve my applications. That’s great for getting rid of the virus, but I also have legit copies of Visual Studio and SQL Server that I will lose, and are expensive.

I was wondering about that... figured I must’ve missed something. :-)

Your Windows and other software are your licensed copies.

You should not have to re-purchase anything, including the OS.

Check with Windows support — they can be pretty helpful at times.
