Researchers, led by Jovan Hutton Pulitzer, claim they have evidence that Roman ships visited North America 'during the first century or earlier.'
Their theory centers on the discovery of what they believe to be a Roman sword on Oak Island, off Nova Scotia.

Thus setting off mass speculation that maybe Columbus was NOT the first.
But the “first” guy on the field is not necessarily the one they remember, it is the guy that brings home the trophy.
And Columbus sure brought home a few trophies, but mostly fueled the interest for much more exploration.
Slaves and gold were powerful incentives at the time.
“There is an excellent book called â1421â the year the Chinese discovered America.”
The book is in doubt, but the concept is not unreasonable. DNA evidence seems to indicate a Polynesian community in South America. There have also been hints of Beaker Culture copper trade, Basque, Phoenician, Carthaginian, Israeli, Celtic, Greek, Roman, Chinese, ....
the site where the sword was discovered is almost useless to say when the sword came to the island. the place has been dug up salted with fake treasure and has had just about everything done to it by treasure hunters. this makes getting accurate archeological info from any find impossible..... I suggest any one wanting an interesting mystery to read up on the island when I was a kid oak island in nova Scotia captivated me with the idea of finding pirate treasure.
My memory is jumbled. Somebody please help me. The Pilgrims at Plymouth observed their first Thanksgiving feast with their Native hosts, and greatly helped by the good offices of an Indian named Squanto, and his buddy Massasoit.
Squanto had supposedly been captured and taken to England at some point, where he learned the language, became a Christian, etc. He somehow made it back to America and was there, wearing a three piece suit and wingtips, ready to assist the Pilgrims when THEY arrived. How and when did all THAT inter-action take place between the two continents?
All the national and state mottos are in Latin.
That all happened in the 1610-1620 timeframe, long after Columbus’ voyage in 1492. Squanto’s story is a fascinating one. Keep in mind many ships were fishing and trading along the coast before permanent settlements were established, creating opportunities like what happened to Squanto.
Sounds like folks here haven’t read Barry Fell’s book America B.C., or similar stuff. There is a lot of, naturally controversial, evidence for Roman and other trade, with America in ancient times. Caches of Roman coins, remains of trading posts and so forth. I’m agnostic on it, but it is plausible given their capabilities.

I got sucked into the Oak Island show. Last episode, Aztecs. Next episode, Romans? After that Ancient Astronauts? How many people were trampled on the Island from everyone burying their treasure there? The only treasure that they are like to find are the ratings treasure that they have already received...

Good points. The Celts were known to still use bronze for their weapons long after other cultures (Romans, Greeks) went to iron or early steels. There were reports of Celtic warriors having to stop in the midst of battle and bend their swords back into shape (!)

My husband, son and I have been following the show. Like Rick Lagina, I remember reading the Readers’s Digest article back in 1965 when I was about 10 years old. I’ve been fascintated ever since!
fascintated = fascinated.
Old, fat fingers!
Perhaps next someone will claim Joseph Smith was there, “Peeping?”
I hope he gets a prize for this.
That said, whatever the origin of the sword, it was probably brought by Vikings.
You know I like the show too, but it is a “REALITY” show that gets its steam from ratings. Not saying the Brothers planted it, because I think their heart is in it, but how about some less than honorable History Channel TV staffer?
