Burlington, Iowa - Des Moines County Sheriff Mike Johnstone accidentally shot himself in the hand.
On Wednesday, December 16th, Sheriff Johnstone suffered a gunshot wound to his left hand while cleaning his personally-owned handgun at his home.
Sheriff Johnstone was taken to Great River Medical Center Emergency Room for treatment of his non-life threatening injury. He will be transferred to another medical facility where he can be treated by a surgeon who specializes in hand injuries.
The stress of caucus season is too much for some folks

Guy I knew had a ‘cleaning accident’, with a Moisin-Nagant. Fortunately his heart wasn’t where he thought it was, so he lived through it. His girl had just left him. ‘Cleaning accident’ kept him out of the crazy ward. One story of many, but we’ll never know I guess.

Management. You gotta love ‘em.
This is even worse than shooting your foot while drawing weapon from your holster. I can understand (but never excuse) how the latter could happen - you accidentally let your finger slide into the trigger guard while drawing. This happens, especially with serpa retention holsters. But there’s absolutely no reason to shoot yourself when cleaning a gun. The first thing you do whenever picking up a weapon is to clear the chamber. I agree with a poster above, there’s good chance the Sheriff was playing with the firearm and then used the old “I was cleaning it” excuse.
Who hasn’t done that?

Rule in my house is you clear the firearm, then show it clear to one other family member who verifies “clear”.
