Tesla has no more business being in business than Yugo.
Which isnât anymore.
So why is Tesla?
Because political correctness, crony capitalism â and a hallucinatory desire to believe in a mirage; to refuse to admit that what you think you see in the distance isnât actually there; that your mind isnât playing tricks on you.
But then, the Yugo was just a bad car.
The Tesla is a bad electric car â and the electric part effaces the bad part. Electric cars can do no wrong â to an extent that is quite literally unbelievable. Unless youâve seen it â and then you will believe.Weibull graph
Iâm exaggerating?
Ok, howâs this:
An extremely embarrassing story broke the other day that two-thirds of Tesla drivetrains â their electric motors, specifically â are destined to require replacement before the cars reach 60,000 miles. This according to an independently commissioned Weibull Reliability Engineering Resources analysis of actual Tesla failure rates and customer reported problems to date (see here).
Two-thirds.
Before 60,000 miles roll by.
Let it roll around in your mouth for a little bit.
Howâs it taste?
Lemony, perhaps?Tesla lemons pic
It is inconceivable that any normal car company could survive such a revelation. The likely â the near-inevitable â failure of the carâs very heart, the thing that makes it go? If a third of new Chevrolets needed a new engine before 60,000 miles elapsed, Chevrolet would not be selling cars at all.
But two-thirds of them?
People would be rioting.
And the government would be ululating the regulatory equivalent of allah akbar. Yet the government is silent. No outraged congress cretins are holding press conferences, demanding hearings.
Solely and only because these Teslas are a protected class of car, the affirmative action hires of the automotive world.
That most of them â two thirds of them â will probably need their guts replaced before they reach 60,000 miles. It ought to shutter Teslaâs doors. Crater âsales.â But people â some people â will continue to âbuyâ (air quotes used because when someone else is âhelpingâ you pay for your purchase â against their will â it is not really a âsaleâ and you are not really âbuyingâ).
The Yugo was a FIAT. They sold the production machines and all to Yugoslavia when they discontinued the model. Even FIAT didn’t want it any more........................
So driving in “Insane Mode” and doing 0-60 in 2.9 seconds means you will need a new car in less than a year?
Great.....Sounds like a deal.
Looks like they upped it to “Ludicrous Mode”
Car now craps out ludicrously faster...

no shock to engineers here.

That's a great line.
Chevrolet DID sell a car that the engine wore out in less than 60k miles. It was the Vega and a disaster for Chevrolet.
Infinitely better.
Without coal to charge these toys, might as well get a horse. But keep letting Obama kill coal...its for Al Gore.
I had a Fiat X1/9 back in the day. Spent more time UNDER it than IN it!........................
The Chevette at least had a cast iron engine block....................
I saw a converted ‘68 Mustang fastback at Cars & Coffee that had a forklift motor. It does 0-60 in 1.9 sec. I forgot what it does the 1/4 in... I think 8.9 and 155 mph. That’s a very clever setup.
From what I can tell living in W Austin (there’s a Tesla on every corner), they’re very nice cars. There should be zero subsidies, but if someone has the bucks, it’s a nice car to tool around in.
want to talk Cadillac diesel? LOL
Who is actually going to put 60,000 miles on a Tesla?
Those who can afford probably use another car for their day-to-day. Any long trips are out of the question due to the range issue. For the most part, it’s going to be a hangar queen that is driven to parties and valet parking so they can show to their friends.
* Millennials can't afford cars (Obamacare, all the mess of the last 7 years if not longer)
* They'd rather ride a bike or do nothing at all.
* What does that portend to an industry regardless of these cars powertrains, aka it's long term survivability.
* Add to this Obama's insane fuel requirements.
* This is driving manufacturers to employ exotic technologies that are typically only used in high end racing to meet these requirements.
* It is no wonder why millennials have just shrugged to all of it...
