Pete Rose has never righted his wrongs (reinstatement denied)
ESPN ^ | 12/14/2015 | William Weinbaum

Posted on 12/14/2015 4:00:06 PM PST by Beave Meister

It was a metaphor for all to see on this fall's World Series pre- and postgame shows. An outcast for more than a quarter-century, Pete Rose appeared as a Fox Sports TV analyst -- on a set outside the stadium.

Now Rose, 74, will remain officially on the outs for the foreseeable future, following Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred's denial on Monday of Rose's bid for reinstatement, 26 years after his lifetime ban based on evidence that he had gambled on the sport -- and on his own team -- as manager of the Cincinnati Reds.

Manfred's ruling is the latest consequence of what even some supporters of the Hit King have characterized as Rose's consistent inability to pursue a path to redemption and return since the MLB investigation initiated by commissioner Peter Ueberroth documented his repeated violations of Rule 21. That rule is the prohibition against betting, posted prominently in every big league clubhouse.

They can put Charlie Hustle into the HoF after he croaks.

A lifetime ban, means what is says.

I don’t expect Rose to repent, and get all weepy. I doubt that Rose, even if he bet against his team, he didn’t give it everything he could to win.

That shouldn’t excuse what he did. Let him pay is debt to baseball in full.

Canton, OH is football

Cooperstown, NY is baseball

It would be interesting to know if Rose actually made more or less money by not being in. He might actually be more famous now by not getting in the HoF back then.

He admitted he bet on games as a player.

If that's the case, that he clearly violated that rule while an active player, it has a bearing on his denial entry to the Hall of Fame. There are other players in the hall whose personal conduct was less than exemplary so that raises a question. But did they bet on games?

I don’t like what MLB is doing getting involved and making money off of online gambling with the recent deal they struck with Draftkings. Kind of hypocritical.

Maybe he can petition His Arrogance for a pardon .... just a couple million of his betting fortune should buy him one and a pardon from God’s chief adviser ought to do it for him!

It prevented him from getting managing jobs worth millions. Guessing he probably lost a chance for $40-60 million over the last 20+ years.

Me and Pete once bet on the same dog race in Vegas at the MGM.
Stood right next to him and cheered our dogs on.
Good guy, just loves to bet on stuff.

His current level of involvement in Baseball is a lot higher than it used to be, not shut out completely.

I don’t doubt that he’s a good guy. But he has made it really, really tough for the commissioner to give him what he wants.

He was betting for his own team to win. It wouldn’t serve his betting interests for his team to take a dive. His duty to perform was still being met.

Apparently if he’d bet on the Yankees to win and was not playing against the Yankees in that game, he would only have faced a year’s penalty.

I don’t see that scenario to be any better than what he was punished for.

>>MLB is entertainment, not government.

Apparently it was a more serious crime for baseball playing entertainers to lie to Congress about using steroids than it was for the Secretary of State to lie to Congress about Benghazi and her emails.

Yeah, he’ll have to settle for what they have been throwing him, which is not peanuts.

MLB let him on the field at this year’s All Star game, he got a standing O.

Doing lots of tv commentary and commercials too.

They are rying to be fair to the guy.

"He admitted he bet on games as a player. “I bet every night, not one or two nights a week. I bet every night on baseball"

And every time he opens his yap some of his supporters will come out and say that's OK, he bet on his teams to WIN.

Pete just digs himself in deeper every time he coughs up another "admission".

Never bet as manager.

Ok, as a manager, but to win.

Ok, well, sometimes to lose.

But never threw a game as manager.

Never as a player.

Ok, as a player, but only to WIN.

Next shoe: Ok, I bet during my playing days that we'd lose, but, hear me out, I personally gave it my best. Can't blame ME if Bench strikes out in the ninth, no sir.

Maybe he thinks Rose will have an easier time getting the NFL to let him into the Football Hall of Fame than getting MLB to let him into Cooperstown.

I think you may be on to something. As a compromise, don’t let him in the baseball hall of fame, but let him in some other sport’s hall. I don’t think any of the other major sports would do it, but maybe a more obscure sport? Curling? Jai Alai? Roller Derby? Modern Pentathlon?

How is he suppose to "right his wrongs"?

He can accept punishment for them but there is no way that you can "right the wrong" of betting when you should not have.
