Large dogs are held in high esteem for a variety of reasons: for their large stature, their strength, and their protective nature and keen watchdog abilities. If you're looking for a reliable canine defender, it's important to consider not only the physical attributes of a dog breed, but its temperament, as well.
Using data from Animal Planet, PetBreeds found the 29 best guard dogs and ranked them by popularity, according to the 2014 AKC popularity rankings. (Three dog breeds that had no ranking were put at the bottom of the list.) Criteria used included that the breed must possess a strong watchdog ability and be known protectors. Only purebreds that were classified as being large or giant and to bark minimally were included.

In San Antonio and South Texas it’s also the Mexican burglar alarm
I look at it this way.
It’s not that the dog needs to be physically dangerous. If the dog is big, a potential intruder is going to be intimidated because he doesn’t know how dangerous the dog may be.
A guard dog should be large enough for size to provide some intimidation. It needs to be well behaved except when it sees its territory encroached upon. Dogs that bark indiscriminately (or all the time) are worthless.
The dog should let you know when the bad guy is near & you should have the proper firearm to do the job, not rely on the dog to disable an intruder.

I just clicked through them all.
I’m not impressed.
Far too many were rather exotic herding breeds that most people never heard of and others were simply “barky” dogs.
That the Beauceron was so far down the list instantly made me suspicious.
What good is yapping if they are not likely to back up the bark?
I’ve never met a Weimeraner who worked like a Dobe or Rott.
Another pointless list from the click bait kings.
I hear you! We have a 16 pound, totally blind Jack Russel. He hears everything and wakes the bigger dogs up so they can join him barking. Nothing is going to sneak up on us. We will be alerted and armed .
Let me guess....this is Killer. What a cutie.
Agreed.
The first two breeds are more suited to guarding livestock and not really very “people oriented”, preferring their “flock”.
A standard Poodle will put a hurt on you and their pack is their people.
The list was goofy, mostly.
Thanks, was hoping someone would do the list. Have never heard of the majority of the breds.
Yup. That’s Dagny, our attack Corgi. She’ll lick you into submission...if you put your head way down low.
Hence, the pointlessness of it.
These “lists” keep popping up.
One of my “favorite stupid lists” was something like “25 dog breeds no one is buying anymore”.
Yeah.
Okay.
o.O
They hear like cats and alert instantly.
The perfect SHTF dog can live on 3oz of meat per day and let you know when to pick up your weapon.
What more do you need?
Basset Hound. Don’t laugh. Thats a full size dog on half size legs.
Ungodly loud bark that sounds like a dog 3 times the size.
Will absolutely tear apart the ‘lower extremities of an invader while being harder to hit due to height.
Can and will chase said invader through the roughest terrain barking all the while so you know where to go ‘find him’.
Sure they are all cute and slobbery. The next time you see one, have the owner show you the teeth in that bejowled mouth and think of the damage potential there.
and here are a couple of Rhodesian Ridgebacks:
There are many handsome dogs on the list.
But in case they're too snuggly to annoy an intruder to death, here's our backup guard dog.
We have friends who have owned Basset Hounds for many years. :)
:)
Ridge backs are seriously scary dogs.
I have had several. It takes a certain type of person to deal with them. They are THE most demanding pet to own I know of. High maintenance is an understatement.
But if you can deal with them and their many, MANY quirks, they are a constant source of entertainment, loyal as hell, very protective/pack oriented (with the family being that pack) and a general ‘annoying’ joy to have around ;)
PS, keep drool cleaner handy.
***************************
That's one thing I can't deal with. We've had Ridgebacks since 1988. The two I posted a pic of earlier in this thread are mine. :)
