Scarification: the new tattoo trend which involves cutting out your flesh
The Sun - UK ^ | 12/9/2015 | SOPHIE TIGHE

Posted on 12/09/2015 1:25:04 PM PST by Boomer

WARNING: some of these images are rather gory.

Move over swallows, motivational quotes and giant roses on your bum – the latest tattoo trend is 'scarification'.

The painful process involves removing a layer of skin and flesh with a scalpel in the shape of your desired design - and then filling the design in with ink.

When the area heals over, the scar becomes an elaborate tattoo.

I remember seeing pictures of stuff like this in National Geographic. What next, stretching your lips with clay plates?

Scarification, from what I’ve read, originated in Africa hundreds of years ago. The Africans were attempting to make themselves unappealing to Arab slave traders. After some generations, tribes had adopted certain scaring designs, and it became known as tribal scaring, which is still common in sub-Saharan Africa.

But that way you can be different, just like everyone else!

Only marks are scars earned in conflict or by misadventure. I just never saw anything I wanted to wear that long.

Ever seen one of those freaks with the stretched out ear lobes? It is becoming way too common in suburbia these days. The lip disks are coming.

It used to be only primitive tribes did crazy things like this.
We are giving up our civilization for tribalism.

Back in the 70s when I was coming up it was so much easier (and less permanent) to be different, just like everyone else.

It’s the first time I’ve seen anything like it. I’ve seen branding and taking an eraser to the skin to make a permanent scar in the shape of whatever which I guess would be a less intricate cousin to this.

They were prohibited in the Army, when I was in the Guard. But if you're referring to civilian police (who now call soldiers civilians), that's a growing trend. It represents today's government well.
