Men have better sense of direction than women, study suggests
Science Daily ^ | December 7, 2015

Using fMRI, the researchers saw that men in the study took several shortcuts, oriented themselves more using cardinal directions and used a different part of the brain than the women in the study.

But when women got a drop of testosterone under their tongue, several of them were able to orient themselves better in the four cardinal directions.

Now they have a GPS with Arnold Schwarzenegger’s voice (Yes, it’s his real voice).

The joke my wife and I have is that whatever direction she is facing, that is north.

Sounds like she’s a sailor. Wherever your boat is pointing, port and starboard are still based on the boat, not the direction.

This has to be correct; I think GPS systems were made for women.

My brother way back when, would grab his map every time I was set to drive more than hollering distance, and he would map out my ride.

He was brilliant with a map; I thought they looked like the underside of a tapestry.

Actually, both sexes navigate by vectors and landmarks. Women tend to rely more on landmarks, men are better with vectors (direction and distance).

“But why is it when they drive and they get lost, they refuse to stop for directions?”

Because we know we have these genetically superior pathfinding skills to fall back on!

I have a GPS that tells me step by step what to do.

That’s nice.

Until the battery dies.

GPS is wonderful; it’s a poor substitute for awareness.

I absolutely agree. Used a GPS for a couple of weeks last summer. Didn’t like it. I’ve always liked a map, but depend on my sense of direction more. I never get lost.

They problem with men is that they are unwilling to ask because they are unwilling to admit they don’t know.

I don't believe, for most men, that it's about "admitting" we don't know. I believe it's more about proving we can figure it out.

It's in our nature to fix stuff. If we are lost, that is just another form of broke. Time to fix what is broke.

Women have a problem, they talk about.

Women talk about their problem to a man, he wants to fix it.

Man tries to fix womans problem...now man has a new problem.

Negative. Just complete lack of a sense of direction.

I remember the first time I drove into San Francisco. I bought one of the map books of the city. Eventually, I realized that, being on a peninsula, San Francisco is hard to get lost in, and that when it came time to go home to San Jose, all I had to do was head south from anywhere. Too bad I didn’t think of that before buying the book.

So true. Mr. GG2 will tell me all these directions about N and SW etc and all I ever say is give me a landmark. :-)

Oh. Well that makes sense. To women it looks like you can’t admit you don’t know.

As for the last 3 lines, ROTFL!!!! Yes, I can see that. But with my husband, we usually didn’t get to the point where he tried to fix a problem because he was too busy just PRETENDING TO LISTEN. Ugh! Drove me crazy. He got very good at it, too.
