Thousands lined the streets of Downtown Albuquerque on Sunday to celebrate hometown hero Holly Holm, the Duke City native who took down Ronda Rousey in November to claim the UFC Women's Bantamweight Championship.
New Mexico waited patiently in the weeks after the fight to welcome home "The Preacher's Daughter," who upset Rousey with a second-round knockout in Australia on Nov. 14 and toured about the country following the win. And at Sunday's parade in her honor, it was clear that the post-fight excitement among Burquenos hadn't waned in the slightest.
Fans showed up in droves, many wearing Holm T-shirts or carrying homemade signs with slogans like "The champ is here in New Mexico" and "Holly has girl power." They chanted Holly! Holly! Holly! as Holm, aboard a trolley, rode by, waving and smiling modestly. Before the parade began, dozens crowded around the trolley, and Holm leaned out signing autographs and posing for photographs. Leading the parade was the Manzano High School marching band, which played peppy tunes in honor of the school's alumna.
When Holm finally took the stage, the massive crowd screamed, clapped and chanted. And then she offered words of gratitude, to her coaches, her family, her friends and her hometown. "You here, Albuquerque, made this possible," she said. "My career started here, my fans started here, my whole career started right here." She said she was thankful for the faith that her team had in her and the support her family. Her voice broke occasionally, though she had warned the crowd early on that she might tear up.

That’s a heck of a lot of people.
Trump/ Holm?
Wow— she’s a lot cuter outside of the ring than I thought.
Anytime a community can find someone to hold a parade for. They should.
Even if it involves someone who participates in a violent sport.. I’m not a fan or follower of female combatants.. Even in the Marines.. UnleSS they can whupp my arse.
maybe fighters ought not dabble in politics and stay focused on opponents in the ring.
Holly rang the bell.. HaPPy Holiday!!
Yet they couldn’t fill University Stadium for the Colorado St game after beating Boise on the Smurf Turf. The Lobos came within 7 points of playing for the conference championship and no one showed up. Pathetic. I wonder if they will show up for the Bowl game against Arizona?
Yes, butt (pun intended) Mobama has a 200 pound advantage in the back. If she knows what she’s doing, that could be lethal.
I tell you what, I can’t wait to see the next Holly Holm fight!
Yes I am a fan!
And I also just wanted to add that out of all the reactions and comments and such to her defeat of Ronda Rousey, Holly Holm’s reaction was the classiest and most sportswomanlike of them all.
Good lady there.
Cool. My brother (RIP) marched in that band in the 60's. I of course played violin in the Grant Jr High Orchestra. We didn't do much marching. ;*)
Congrats to Holly Holm and Albuquerque!
At least Holly is a female.
Ms. Obama would simply start to speak, and her opponent would instantly fall asleep.
Maybe, if Holly's there.
First, I’m glad she won and pushed the tiresome Rousey off the spotlight....but also, i was impressed at the way she beat Rousey...and I’m therefore a fan. She seems like a much better person.
I still do not understand what would make a woman want to be a fighter.
Are there any men who find that sort of physique attractive? Yikes!
I agree. I know some big, buffed women and they are good friends, but I do not find them attractive. One is married to a good friend. To each his own.
Mrs.40 is 5'3", 105 lbs.
Well your matching the "manly" Moochelle against the womanly Holly Holm. Might be a mismatch but I think Miss Holm can take care of herself. (And yes, the Internet/Youtube rumor making the rounds these days is that Mrs. Obama is not quite what "she" appears to be.)
I do. I dated a woman who was a bodybuilder. Great body and she was all woman.
Chacun a son gout....
That is bad. I'm a BSU Broncos fan. Have been for a long time. They're not my Alma Mater, but they were the closest college to me with a football team. I currently work in Albuquerque. I'm surprised at how many Lobo fans who know I'm a BSU fan didn't even mention the game. It was weird. Like they didn't believe it.
BSU had 4 losses on the Smurf turf going into this season dating back to 1999. The Lobos made it five, and Air Force made it six (back to back losses at home for the Broncos). It just seems that Albuquerque is not a college football town, but they do love the basketball program.
I thought about getting tickets to the Gildan Bowl, because UNM is playing.
