I've been fortunate to hunt in North America for more than 30 years, mostly in Wisconsin but also in Alaska, Montana, Canada and Mexico, and have many treasured experiences.
The 2015 Wisconsin deer season, however, brought an unwelcome first in my world.
A buck I shot Nov. 2 in Richland County tested positive for chronic wasting disease.
I learned about the test result on Wednesday.
The meat from this buck, which I deboned, wrapped and stored frozen, will be thrown in the garbage.
The 30 pounds of sausage made from trimmings will be tossed, too.
Destroying the venison goes against every grain of my hunting ethic. I wouldn't kill an animal I didn't intend to fully utilize.
But this 150-pound, 2 and a half year old, 11-point Wisconsin whitetail is destined for the dump.
What a shame.
The meat won't be consumed in keeping with recommendations of the Wisconsin Division of Public Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and every other health agency to weigh in on the subject.
Since 2003 the Wisconsin Division of Public Health has recommended "venison from deer harvested inside the CWD Management Zone not be consumed or distributed to others until CWD test results on the sources deer are known to be negative."
Although no human illness has been linked to CWD, health experts are clear and consistent in their recommendation: Don't eat meat from a CWD-positive animal.

An 11-point buck shot by Outdoors Editor Paul A. Smith during a bowhunt in Richland County.
Hunting and outdoors ping.
FReep Mail me if you want on, or off, this Wisconsin interest ping list.
How long after taking samples can you get your results?
How does one dispose of it so that it isn’t spread to other wildlife?
WOULD IT WORK to bury the meat in a pretty deep hole? We
have got to where we are not really all that able to do a
lot of digging. We’re way out in the country. How would
burning on a bonfire work; would that just spread it? Fire
usually consumes fairly well. ????
Burning would work, as long as it was completely incinerated.
He also better sanitize all of his processing equipment by soaking it in bleach.
I think that cooking doesn’t destroy prions, so I’m not sure burning would work. Maybe incineration?
A shame, I suppose a good thing he had it tested, without some indication of illness I wouldn't.
A few weeks.
Did something “escape” from a government and/or University lab?
We used to have a furnace that would have incinerated
anything; but have moved over to mostly wood heat with a
few area electric heaters. - We don’t eat a huge amount of
meat; and throw very little of the scraps away in the
compost. Mostly, the dog gets all the meat scraps. Chicken
bones go in the regular garbage. Husband doesn’t hunt our
deer; hasn’t in the 30 yrs. we’ve lived out here. He does
use the squirrels for target practice out front. (They
steal his pears and he has grown to detest them.) The
deer have it made in the shade on our place - posted and
we don’t eat them - and they know it!
THe DNR has statistics. They are tracking this very carefully.
If I recall correctly, it’s a prion disease, kind of like KURU.
Burn it to a fine ash so no other critters will feed off the leftovers.
The DNR is not under the jurisdiction of the (formerly) rigid standards of UCMJ.
The Feds have one unified standard now.
What will best serve the continued financial interests of former and current Federal employees?
At one time, long ago, Federal employees were awarded bonus pay if they reported suspected government corruption within their departments.
Nowadays, it seems that Federal employees are rewarded/encouraged to report civilian resistance to government corruption.
President Trump should issue an executive order disbanding Federal Government Employee Unions.
I don't care if he does that before or after he issues the executive order kicking the UN out of the USA.
(So he hasn't said he will do that-kick the UN out of the USA, but if he does, the landslide election numbers would be guaranteed!)
Thankfully, we don’t have the problem; but were trying to
advise someone else faced with the problem.
Until I personally see a deer that looks like it has a disease, I won’t believe in the existence of CWD.
As rabid as the leftists are against hunting, I believe it’s a tactic to keep people out of the woods and put a dent in the number of hunters.
Funny how the “CWD Zone” in Wisconsin centers around Madison, the leftist capital of the midwest, isn’t it?
Isn’t it also funny how there are a couple big auto insurance companies based in Madison, and that they have a financial interest in trumping up a reason to exterminate all the deer, thereby enabling the insurance execs to get new a Mercedes more often?
