Carry gun for the current day
vanity ^ | 02 Dec 2015 | dangerdoc

I carried a 1911 then an M9 in the service.

Carried a 1911 commander for a while as a civilian but as I got older and attire for work changed, I switched to a subcompact 9mm.

Last year, the world started feeling more dangerous and I upgraded to a 10mm double stack pistol, bag carry. But in a world where the bad guys show up with rifles and today with rifles, armor and bombs, any pistol seem pretty anemic.

I'm curious what other freepers carry or are thinking about self defense in the world that Zero has given us.

Armor is still packed away, for now.

H&K P2000 with extended mag and 9MM 124gr (13) rounds.
That will get you 8 years in NJ

I would have preferred the slightly larger (and cheaper) .380 Walther PPK/S because it is double/single action. The Sig feels like it’s 3/4 the size of the PPK, lighter weight with better sights. These are useful traits.

If you like the 10mm I highly recommend DoubleTap Ammo for the best variety of the best 10mm loads out there.

Concur. Underwood and Buffalo Bore are also very good.

Full disclosure: I have a new Glock 20 that I'm still trying to work into a carry routine. The problem is finding a holster that fits me. With a gun that large inside-the-waistband is not really an option unless I want to buy my pants two sizes larger. :-(

“The risk profile says .380 concealable auto or .38 revolver.”

Ruger 38 special with red laser and hollow points.

>>I used to canoe carry.

>>That turned out badly.

Then this thread must be really painful for you. We take care of our guns and have them at hand and really don’t give two craps if the government knows that.

When you think its time to bury your guns, that’s when you need to dig them up.

The main question on this thread is a great one, and should be thought through.

But your quoting this old, old saying leads me to a new decision: every vehicle I own will have a rifle stored in it from now on. Preferably a semi-auto.......but even a lever-action 30-30 would be better than not having one in a tough situation........

Can’t even begin to dream of legal CC, but...

My Charter Arms .38.

Cheap enough it could ‘disappear’ if needed. Even a morally justified and possibly legally defensible use would still be a LOT of lawyer’s bills.

Good enough at the 5 to 7 yards that I consider the most likely distance and thusly train with. .38 is cheap as I reload and have lots of brass and primers. If there’s more than one Bad Guy, I’m probably dead anyway unless wifey is around with her .357 and Mossberg 500.

Since I not only live in a people’s republic, but am a master of Run Fu (being able to run like a coward faster than anyone ever thought it possible for a fat white guy to run), having a firearm outside of a safe or the range is potentially problematic. Pops said “better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6”, but he wouldn’t approve of laying out $10K in unnecessary lawyers bills, either.

Using Buffalo Bore currently, I’ve heard Double Tap is good but I’m looking at Underwood for my next purchase, prices are good and I’ve heard good things.

I have a P320 that is incredible - and love it.....Hogue grips - can consistently hit a 12” target at 25 yards......most accurate .380 there is.....can’t recommend a pocket pistol more highly.....

My favorite gun to carry is the Browning Hi-Power. It is comfortable to carry in a well built shoulder holster and fits my hand perfectly. In fact I think old John Browning must have had a hand similar to mine.

Nothing wrong with the original Belgian 13 round mags but I prefer the Mec-Gar 15 round ones for carry in the gun and their 24 round ones for spares. I also have a 30 round mag which I sometimes conceal in my clothes as it fits well and looks well and has been totally reliable. My carry load for just about everything would be Reminton Golden Saber HPs. They seem to be reliable, actually very reliable in tests I have read of.

I always carry the Hi-Power loaded with the hammer cocked and the safety on. I also keep a strap between the hammer and firing pin. For some reason, I have always thought the Browning was easy to hit with. Maybe it is just the way it fits my hand but I nail small game with it better than even my .22s.

If I were just starting out I might just change that to a double stack full size 10mm Glock 15 round mags would be OK with oversize ones as spares. The Glock would be carried cocked.

Ruger SP101 2.25” .357 with two speed loaders. Anything more than that in the NE will get you arrested for attempted mass murder.

I carried a 29 for years. Awesome gun, just too big for my taste for everyday carry.
