Funny how at the college that I went to 15 years ago was still doing literally EVERYTHING on their network using clear text. Very little in the way of permissions on the servers.
If I knew then what I know now, I could have owned(pwnd)the place. I went back a couple of years ago, and everything is on VLANs, and encrypted - done right. I don’t know why, but it made me a little sad. lol
Heck, back then you could paint the house, go to college, get married and have a family, retire, have grandchildren and then check the connection, and it probably worked. The Good Old Days...
Yep, the good old days of dialing up and getting a busy signal. Then finally after an hour getting in, only to be disconnected when somebody called your phone number. Good times.
Even it looks better than the new mobile friendly websites. They are goshawful!
Half of the time the links/menues do not work. And that tile boxy format is horrendous.
If you think about the Nobel Prize, the money for that prize came from Alfred Nobel and his fortune, which came from a scientific development - dynamite. You would think Edison, Ford, Rockefeller, et al would qualify for a Nobel Prize, considering their technical/scientific achievements - but then, what would be the point, they were as rich as Nobel himself.
But you know who is NOT as rich as Nobel and his estate? Tim Berners-Lee. What a development he created! And he did not get much if any money for it. I say, if the Nobel Committee has anything at all on the ball, they would give the prize to HIM.
“...be disconnected when somebody called your phone number...”
I hated it when that happened.
It can’t possibly be hosted on the same server. Could it?
Nah. Porn was on 16mm and 8mm back then.
The WWW just made it more convenient.
Heck, even the ancient Egyptians had porn. Look at the hieroglyphics they won't show you on PBS.
Absolutely not the same server at Cern, Sam. . . but still the same URL address. It was originally hosted on Tim Berners-Lee's NeXT computer you saw in my ping which was connected to Cern's mainframe.
Thanks to Swordmaker for the ping!!
BullDog - You were part of the history - the birth of ‘modern’...
Lol. Yeah, and the poorest of all my classmates. Most went on to become dot-com billionaires. Including my elder brother.
I stopped to smell the roses. And here I am in Mexico retired....
“It was originally hosted on Tim Berners-Lee’s NeXT computer you saw in my ping which was connected to Cern’s mainframe. “
Article says Tim Berners-Lee submitted the proposal for the WWW on March 12, 1989 from this NEXT computer, created by Steve Jobs. Still bears the sticker stating:
“This machine is a server: DO NOT POWER IT DOWN!!”
My pleasure. :)
Thanks for posting! Just sent to my son in San Jose :)
Many years ago a young man visited my home and shared a story about being pushed out of a dot com he had contributed to for little pay... He was given a small severance.
What bothered him the most was the millions he felt he would have gotten if he had been able to stay... In his case the company was destroyed in the dot com bust - and he (unbeknownst to him when he was talking to me) luckily got out on top.
Life’s a crap shoot sometimes - a process of learning to live with defeat.
If you can smell the roses at times - - you’re way ahead of most of us. Thanks for sharing.
LOLOL It’s as funny as I remembered it. You rock, FourPeas.
