“Shrewd” can be dangerous to those who are in the vicinity of the one acknowledged to be the “shrewd” one.

Sly, cunning, duplicitious, such a person takes advantage of another’s timidity, or lack of knowledge, or simple naivety, to compel some great injustice to be visited upon other parts of the public.

“Predatory” might be another adjective that applies.

Longerich also seeks to debunk the theory that Hitler had an irresistible charisma that captivated Germans, arguing it was largely artificially constructed by the Nazi propaganda machine which pumped out pictures of entranced fans at rallies.

Sure, the Nazis were good at propaganda displays. But many, many Germans were captivated and followed him blindly. One doesn't exclude the other.

He may also be setting the bar too high. Most Germans weren't in a state of constant ecstasy about Hitler, but they were inspired enough to believe in him and to follow him to their doom. Wasn't that bad enough?

"It is thus necessary that the individual should finally come to realize that his own ego is of no importance in comparison with the existence or his nation; that the position of the individual ego is conditioned solely by the interests of the nation as a whole... that above all the unity of a nation's spirit and will are worth far more than the freedom of the spirit and will of an individual."

Adolph and Bernie are reading the same choir book. So many similarities can't be a coincidence.

"You know, not many people knew it, but the Fuhrer was a terrific dancer. That is because you were taken in by that verdammte Allied propaganda! Such filthy lies! They told lies! But nobody ever said a bad word about Winston Churchill, did they? No! "Win with Winnie!" Churchill! With his cigars, with his brandy. And his ROTTEN painting! Rotten! Hitler, THERE was a painter! He could paint an entire apartment in one afternoon! TWO COATS! Churchill. He couldn't even say "Nazi". He would say "Nooooozeeehz, Nooooozeeehz!" It wasn't NOSES, it was NAZIS! Churchill! Let me tell you THIS! And you're hearing this straight from the horse - Hitler was better looking than Churchill. He was a better dresser than Churchill. He had more hair! He told funnier jokes! And he could dance the PANTS off of Churchill!"
