Think you want a tiny house? Businesses offer a tryout first

CROYDON, N.H. (AP) -- Hilary and Shane Lentz were hooked on the idea of a tiny house, but they weren't sure the reality would be so appealing.

Their curiosity led them to the hills of New Hampshire, where a business that started at Harvard University rents out tiny houses for $99 a night. The company, Getaway, has drawn visitors from afar who come to sample life in a 160-square-foot house before they dive headlong into the lifestyle.

"It's a way to test-drive tiny house living," said Jon Staff, the founder and CEO of Getaway. "We operate them a little bit like hotel rooms in the woods."

Across the country, more businesses are letting the curious try out tiny living. Caravan, a hotel in Portland, Oregon, offers six tiny houses ranging from 84 to 170 square feet, for $145 a night. Dozens of tiny houses are available through vacation rental websites, posted by their owners.

Definitions vary, but some say a tiny house is anything smaller than 400 square feet. Advocates tout the environmental and financial perks of tiny living.

Tiny Houses.

>>>> psshhh.

I have a tiny house. It’s called an RV. It’s 8 x 19 for about 152 square feet. I pull it with my SUV.

Would I want to live in it full time? Nope.

Would I pay 30 to 60 to even 90 thousand bucks (or more) for a well built Tiny House? Hell No.

Kind of like living in a camper?

Here’s a thought. It’s one room. The toilet is in that room. Person A has to poop. Person B’s options are limited.

My local state park offers cabins in the same size range for much less each night.

Could buy a nice-looking shed for a couple of thousand bucks and fix it up to make it habitable, spend far less than what they`re asking.

Or, you could sign up for a few years with your Uncle’s submarine service.

That’s how I figured out that “tiny living” is not my cup of tea. And it didn’t cost me a dime! :-)

400 sq. feet would accommodate 3 10x10 rooms and a good sized bathroom almost as large. Add in a couple of sleeping lofts.

Al Gore touts it for the masses. Of course, he practices what he preaches in his tiny 20,000 square foot mansion. And that’s just ONE of his “tiny houses”.

They’re kinda far apart so he has to use a tiny jet to get to and fro. A tiny Suburban takes him to and from the airport.

Enviros are such chumps.

There have been a number of “tiny house” motels all up rt 16 in NH for decades. They go back to the 50’s, I think, and are usually called “cozy cabins” or some such slightly less trendy names. When I was 8 my family stayed in one out of desperation because we couldn’t find a normal hotel room, lol. It was cold!

Our family cabin is about 16’ x 16’ I would guess (256 sq. feet). Two queen beds and a bunk bed make up one have. The kitchen, eating table and a couple small sofas, chair and pot-belly stove make up the other half. Hand pump out in the back.

Would spend all summer up there with my mom, three siblings, gramma and grandpa, and dad on long weekends. It was fine.

Oh. Add in another 8 square feet for the outhouse!

Harness them like a team of horses to pull it.

Most of them are more than one room.
My wife wouldn’t go for it, but they are far more roomy than what I had all those years in the Marines.

Except when I lived out of doors. Which was often.

My home is relatively small. 2400 square foot for 6 people. Not a mansion at all. In Maryland our home was about 3200 square foot. What can you do? My sister’s home is 6800 square foot but it is in Indiana which is affordable to have a house that size.

We have 2,400 sq. ft. for 11 people plus a floating population of, “Who is this kid? Oh, who cares, just wash up her dishes and don’t give her my wine.”

I could do a “tiny house” if I was alone, but not with other people.

I’m in about 2500 soft with a wife and 2 children. When I was single 400 sqft would have been plenty for me.

The only problem is that my gun safe would take up half the living room.
