Bindi Irwin being refused DWTS pay as judge demands proof father is dead

A court reportedly requires proof that the 'Crocodile Hunter', who was killed by a stingray barb in 2006, will give up his right to the 17-year-old's earnings...

Bindi Irwin will reportedly be prevented from claiming her Dancing with the Stars pay by a judge who is demanding proof that her 'Crocodile Hunter' father Steve Irwin is dead.

Australian Bindi is 17 and so signed a minor's contract with the ABC show, which requires her parents to agree to give up their rights to her earnings, which at present stand at $230k.

Mother Terri has done so - but a judge at the LA Superior Court has ruled that without the same from Steve 'the court is unable to find that it is in the best interest of the minor to be bound by the terms of the contract', according to TMZ.

Animal lover Steve was killed by a stringray barb in 2006 when Bindi was just eight years of age.

I’m not really sure that’s what the judge said. I think that’s the headline writer trolling for hits. All we get in the story that comes straight from the judge is that they are unable to find the contract to be in the best interest of the minor until conditions that TMZ carefully didn’t bother to quote are met. I bet if we actually got the whole quote it would be a bland perfectly reasonable request for a death certificate.

Show the judge one episode of “The Crocodile Hunter” and ask “Is that a man who would stay out of the public eye for 9 years if he was alive?”

Except, why is this in front of a judge to begin with?

Who filed a complaint bringing it before him?

Someone is going to look like a first rate CHICKEN STUFF for having done it.

Certificates of Death are provided (at a cost ) by the funeral/crematory/interment company (here in the states, not sure about the aussies). For any legal process requiring a COD, an original is usually required.

Seems pretty straightforward, the youngun has been performing for a few years, and this should be taken care of by her representation.

Just damn......

Might just be part of the procedure. Given that some of the biggest stars in the history of Hollywood got totally ripped off my their parents and made one of Hollywood’s first major scandals I wouldn’t be surprised if they put a methodology in place that requires judicial approval (you can just submit contracts to court without a complaint). That way if the parents do rip the kid off Hollywood’s hands are completely washed (”we tried, look a judge approved it and everything”). Also given the international nature of this one and the additional paperwork that requires they might have had to go through a judge for that.

HOW did the judge get involved? WHO asked him to rule? Typical modern media reporting which omits the key facts of the story.

I agree, but why did the Judge call for a press conference? I think a quick phone call to her Mom would have cleared it up and we would not have known about it.

I actually thought of that after posting to you, and I think your thoughts make sense. There may be a requirement.

And I guess a judge might need to see proof too.

You’d be surprised at who all might want/require a Death Certificate.....after my mother died in a hospital, there were some billing issues that came up sometime after — and that hospital requested a copy of her certificate.

Is this a California judge or an Australian judge? Isn’t she an Australian citizen?

Dancing With The Stars is a VERY good paycheck. Even the contestant who gets voted off after one week ends up with a very nice chunk of change.

I don’t see any press conference from the judge. This looks like the usual TMZ cruising through semi-public records thing they do.

It’s a California judge who has to approve the legality of a contract drawn up in California.
