The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
Most of the week has been spent working on tax forms. I have quite a few yellowish lemons- not quite ready to pick. I am picking a few persimmons to eat each day - getting better at telling which are for sure ripe-most are not yet ripe.
Getting ready for a trip to Branson and looking forward to that. Feeling better-thanks for the prayers. Neck still has some swelling, but the I finally got the steri strip to let go.
Prayers up for Johnny and Arrowhead. Have a great weekend everyone. God Bless.
Had our first frost last night here in NW Iowa. It was 31.5 degrees this morning when I got up.
Thankfully I’ve got everything harvested, except for some sugar beets and carrots.
It was a great year, praise the Lord. Good weather. Just enough rain.
Pinging the list.
Augie, your picture last week reminded me of the Quarry on last week’s Walking Dead episode-just not as deep, and no zombies - LOL.
Maybe our first frost tonight here in west Michigan. Still have the same potatoes to dig up. I did get the carrots, pulled pepper plants. I waited this summer for second growth broccoli, it was late but has been coming in like crazy. Having some with dinner tonight with our last summer squash. My paw paw trees are too big to cover this fall, hope they don’t get too damaged this winter. I have stakes next to each trunk and have them tied pretty good in case the wind gets bad. The colors are not peak yet, probably next week. Our 37th anniversary is Wednesday, and the colors are usually pretty good then. I’m going to miss the garden!
Ping.
I heard that we are heading toward some 30s too.
Our first descent below 32 wasn’t supposed to come until tonight. I was surprised this morning when I looked at the temp.
Wow, glad I’m in Central TX. Still getting tomatoes, peppers, squash down here.
Happy anniversary. I want to plant winter wheat and/or rye every where I can see this year. It makes the outdoors look like spring with all the green-LOL.
Cold weather can be sneaky that way.
Just threw some sheets over my lettuce and Swiss chard, since there’s a few nights near-but-above freezing coming, followed by a warm week. As a Newby gardener, I’m experimenting. I put garbage bags over my basil (out of sheets unless I take the ones off the beds) but I think they are toast anyway.
One exciting note - I found some baby cilantro among the weeds where the previous parents were! isn’t nature wonderful?!
Nothing in the garden. But I am enjoying the weather. Waiting for quotes to come back on composting my yard and breaking up some of the clay. The dried clay makes my yard look like a dried out lake bed.
Enjoy the weekend all.
Yesterday the weather was wonderful, today not bad. Heading into some 35 degree night weather soon. May get a first frost here in a few days.
Have a pink Camellia Sasanqua shrub about 6 feet tall that is blooming like crazy. Nice.
One more (oriental) persimmon on the tree out back. I forgot to go down by the river and look for paw-paws this year. Lots of those trees on the banks of the James River in Richmond.
Wonderful indeed. I like to experiment too. I cover stuff with row covers this time of the year, because they still allow the sun and rain to get through, and I don’t have to run out and remove them in the AM so that the sun doesn’t heat the plants up too much.
I can imagine - our soil has lots of clay.
I wish I knew where to look for some paw paws here. They are supposed to be native to Missouri-I have never seen or tasted one.
Thank you!
They like creeks. People who know where they are at usually don’t tell anyone. It is the most amazing thing I have ever tasted in my life. Astounding to me that it is our only native tropical fruit. High in potassium too.
A bit of yellow on my lemons as well. Looks like a good crop, somewhere in the area code of 100.
Plenty of blooms on the pumpkins but not a single set. Might be that it's been too hot. It was certainly too hot for the Cillantro to sprout and now I have it coming up in a dozen places.
Glad the recovery is going well. Mrs. Texan goes in next week for the 4th surgery on her broken leg, this time to remove the plate that caused the infection that has required antibiotics for the past 4 months. We are both praying that she will be able to put some weight on it in the very near future. It's been hard for her to get down to the river to do the laundry in a wheelchair and I'm running out of clothes....
Have a great and safe trip.
Our jalpeno pepper plant is blooming again and loaded with peppers. We are giving them away to family.
We are having a warm Oct in GA. The leaf color is terrible so far. Hoping for a cold snap.
Our Fall garden is not very diverse this year but collards, broccoli and romaine lettuce doing great. I put out a late red potato bucket. Hoping for one more crop before it gets too cold.
