Since last year, when her husband died unexpectedly in a Davidson County hospital, Francine Braun Wolberg’s grief has given way to anger over the long wait for answers. Her husband suffered from early onset Alzheimer’s, but he was otherwise healthy before going to the Thomasville Medical Center for mental health treatment. State Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Deborah Radisch performed an autopsy in Raleigh on June 12, 2014, the day after he died. But months later, there was still no death certificate listing the cause of death. That meant that Wolberg couldn’t collect survivor’s annuity payments needed to pay college tuition for the couple’s youngest daughter. She questioned the . . .

Husband dies suspiciously in a hospital. Wife requests autopsy. Autopsy performed day after death by state medical examiner. Husband's employer won't pay survivor benefits without cause of death. Fifteen months later no report from the state medical examiner defining cause of death. After pressure from Charlotte newspaper a report finally issued with cause of death "inconclusive".

More evidence of a broken medical care system and medical examination system.

Happens sometimes, but not after a year...smells of cover-up.

Hospital?... or even autopsy at fault, for poor service, badly performed!...

I can imagine how a medical serial killer could rack up a high score, likely use drugs or methods that are either hard to detect or without a timely autopsy could “disappear” from a deceased systems. Months go by, the killer gets away-——scot free!

in this case it really was the gummit blocking the path and not even a court could make it happen faster. one of many lacunae in things that we normally expect to happen efficiently.

“Widow should have hired a lawyer after just a week or so.”

She tried to. No lawyer would touch it.

this is not a problem with the medical care system..

its an insurance problem....despite having the guy dead and buried they still needed a reason....and a reason wasn't obvious to the medical director...

but let me get this straight....the guy was "healthy" even though he had was increasingly combative and had an psychotic break and was hospitalized...

he was not "healthy"....

I wonder if he had a CT scan of the head, and MRI, etc....I would hope they checked for mad cow disease.

By healthy they mean he was physically healthy, but suffering from the early stages of alzheimer’s. His wife saw him a few hours before he died and a nurse checked him a few minutes before he died. No signs of trauma or physical trauma.

Perhaps he was given the wrong medicine by mistake or intentionally. There was no reason for him to suddenly die while in a hospital.

“There was no reason for him to suddenly die while in a hospital.”

People can suddenly die anyplace.

I’ve seen it seversl times, most recently in an old classmate of one of my daughters. Gone in a second——age 51.
