LOS ANGELES -- Mets shortstop Ruben Tejada suffered a fracture to the fibula of his lower right leg in a nasty collision at second base Saturday night in the seventh inning of a Game 2 loss to the Dodgers in the NL Divison Series.
The Dodgers' Chase Utley slid late and hit Tejada hard just as Tejada was turning around to attempt a double play on a grounder hit by Howie Kendrick. Tejada flipped over Utley and landed hard on his left side.
The Dodgers went on to score a total of four runs in the inning en route to a 5-2 victory, which tied the series at 1-1.

This is a medium volume ping list during the baseball season and a low volume ping list when all life stops in late October.
If you would like to be on the ping list please FReepmail me.
Agree...clearly sliding into the shortstop, who was trying to stay clear of the slide. No different than a pitcher beaming a batter. If the severity of the injury were known at the time, it could have emptied benches.
A clear case of interference and the umpire didn’t have the chops to call it. Utley knee didn’t touch the ground until he was passed second base. In addition, he never attempted to touch the base. Mets should have been out of the inning on a double play, with a 2-1 lead in tact. Instead, Tejada is out for the rest of the post season with a broken leg, and LA scored 4 runs to win, 5-2
PS: 5 years ago, Utley broke Tejada’s leg on a late slide. This one was so much worse.
Not much different than Josh Donaldson (A known jerk) NOT sliding soon enough in the Rangers/Blue Jays first game. Roughned Odor the Rangers 2nd baseman jumped over him and hit him in the head with a knee.
It is lucky that only Donaldson, the idiot who slid late was only slightly injured.
I’m going to reserve judgement until I hear the important opinion of George Will.
Looked dirty to me.
Joe Torre is “digesting” before he poops out a response from the league.
No hit on a Met is dirty. Nice job, Chase.
Very dirty.
I saw that...nothing like a “rapid response”...
Joe Torre is digesting before he poops out a response from the league.

I watch a lot of baseball. Love the game. But also recognize the reality that its big business. There’s an unsavory aspect to baseball now that protects the business side above all. Instead of quick, decisive “calls” that address incidents like this we get long, drawn out “digestions” from baseball execs. Its all about the money.
Hope you don't object to the edit to your astute comment.
Im going to reserve judgement until I hear the self-important opinion of George Will.
Watched it live. No dirty play. The toss to Tejada was poor and he choose to spin and put his back to the runner. It was a poorly executed play by both mets players. Utley did exactly what a player is supposed to do. Tejada made a weird backwards spin move to account for the toss coming to him being way off line.
I don’t have a side in this game. Never loved the slide into 2nd to break up DPs but it’s part of the game. No one on tv even hinted that it was wrong. I hope the guy has a full recovery for next year. Tough way to go out, especially when the 2B tag was overturned.
Slide was absolutely not dirty. Late. Hard. Yes. Dirty. No. Breaking up a dirty play has been part of the game forever. The injury occurred low and could have happened if the slide was different. Until it was confirmed that Tejada’s leg was broken all anyone cared about was whether or not Utley was out for not touching the bag.
complte BS- Utley was nowhere near the base and out of the base path to take out Tejada. Mets now have a hole as SS. I hope the Mets retaliate and take one of the Dodgers out in game three....so pissed.
BS- utley wasn’t even near the base- he went directly for Tejada....mind as well let them go out and tackle the centefielder so he can’t make the catch.
Yup, that’s better.
I’ve watched it a dozen times and you sir are full of crap.
He didn’t even hit the ground in the slide until he had passed the bag. That combined with making no attempt whatsoever to touch the bag shows it to be a clear attempt to take out the SS on a baseball version of a reverse chop block.
I have no love loss for either of these teams but dirty is dirty.
Even if this was the NFL, Utley would have been penalized 15 yards for Unsportsmanlike Conduct, ejected from the game and suspended for 5 games. MLB—nothing. Watch for new rules this winter, like the Posey rule. The umps and their partners on the replay in New York city were wusses for not calling this. Payback will be hell for Utley and the Dodgers.
