I experienced this effect after I upgraded my iPhone 5c to iOS 9 -- didn't know about this new feature and didn't know it was on by default.

Granted it could be handy in situations where WiFi is intermittent -- and I live in a rural area. But I saw my cell data usage go up about 35-40%, enough that I triggered the warning on my monthly usage. Surprised the heck out of me.

So as of tonight I've turned the feature OFF. Figured it was useful to let my fellow FReepers know.

Thank you. I was unaware of this but had heard some things that made me reluctant to upgrade the OS. Any other problems you are aware of?

As the Stupid grows, and companies are more and more focused on elevating depravity, I can see a time when software becomes literally unusable. OS and iOS are becoming more and more Windows and Android like = clunky junky.

So how do you turn Wi-Fi Assist off?

Go into Settings.
Choose Cellular.
Scroll way down to Wi-Fi Assist.
Switch the slider to the "off" position.

Why do they even have a feature like that. When I have bad wifi coverage, usually at work, it isn’t too hard to select the wifi off and make a conscious decision to use the mobile network.

Well I’ll say this about iOS 9. Since I upgraded, the AirPlay works much better with my Bose speakers. I used to always have the connection break and then I’d have to fuss with it to get it to work again. But no more with iOS 9.

Thanks for the heads up. I’ll pass this along to the Iphone user in the household.

Thanks. Good to know. My wife and I pretty much only use cellular data to stream music while driving. This keeps us well under out shared 6 GB/mo plan.

Also a good time to remind travelers to disable all cellular data outside the U.S. where data runs typically $20/MB

So, 2 big features that people look for with their new smartphones, are to be avoided?

Wi-Fi and a data plans are a couple of the most desirable features that people want and many need.

Looks like some people might as well give up their feature-rich smartphones if they’re going to be paying the price for using them.

Thanks for the notice. I’m an Android guy but the wife is an Apple person. I had to update her phone to 9.0.1 (with her permission, of course) to find the mentioned default. Found it right away...switched to off.

I’m just glad I didn’t brick her phone.

This article is a good word to the wise that the WIFI assist could come up and bite iOS 9 users in the rear patootie. . . Apparently it is intended to automatically switch users from a weak WIFI to one's Cellular signal for data if the WIFI gets too spotty, but that could result in cellular data overage charges. Currently this option is ON by default. If you have a low data usage plan, TURN IT OFF and manage your switch over yourself. — PING!

Am I the only person who finds this feature useful? I’m on the road a lot, and my phone is constantly grabbing a weak Wi-Fi signal, slowing everything to a crawl until I figure out what is going on and switch it off. And then forget to switch it back on when I get home.
