Los Angeles Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully scores record for career longevity

Yesterday, baseball broadcasting icon Vin Scully (USA) was officially recognised for having the Longest career as a sports broadcaster for a single team, having been behind the mic for an incredible 65 years 5 months and 22 days (as of 23 September).

Known for his distinctive lyrical yet simple play-by-play descriptions, the legend has been announcing the Los Angeles Dodgers games since 1 April 1950 when the team were based in New York as the Brooklyn Dodgers.

I know it was all my fault and I have been haunted by it for decades. Nowadays, any Politician I give Money to is doomed to lose. LOL

The man has a distinctive voice. You could hear him in a crowded bar talking about the price of tea in China and you’d still know it was Vin Scully

Vin Scully is a faithful Catholic, a loyal Dodger and a fan favorite. His voice is sweet, welcoming and healing. His stories are folksy, historical and enjoyable for shut-ins, hospital patients and baseball fanatics.

I grew up listening to Scully. I miss a quiet Dodger Stadium, the facts of Ross Porter, the stories by Jim Murray, the fun Laker games by Chic Hern and the wisdom of John Wooden. I also miss Govenor Pete Wilson, safe neighborhoods in the San Fernando Valley and the space industry in Downey.

Scully is a thin link to a golden past.

Unless it’s a mistake, maybe it’s something like an announcer for the San Diego Padres when they were a Pacific Coast League team, but they later became a major league team....not exactly the same franchise though.

Vinnie indicated recently that next season will probably be his last, God willing. He'll be 88. He always says, "If you want to make God laugh, just tell Him about your plans."

Similarly, Dick Enberg announced this week that next year will also be his last. He's in his mid-70s. But I'm only in my mid-60s, so I'll be carrying on...

Scully is gifted with a very pleasant voice. One can enjoy the game while not being distracted by the announcer. It’s about the ball game, not about him. Congrats, Vin.
