Dropping Cable But What About NFL MLB NBA Sports? Any Ideas?
9/23/15

If you have dropped cable, but have a household full of sports nuts, what if any, solutions have others come up with to drop cable, go Roku, and still watch the games?

MLB has MLB.TV streaming. I streamed a few of their ‘free’ games. The quality was not great, kept buffering and messing up. They still say they have the right to blank out games that are not sold out. I don’t know if they enforce that because most games I have watched (Rangers home and away) most of the stadiums (day, night and weekends) where 1/3 to 1/2 filled.

NFL is supposed to be offering streaming, but I am not sure where or when.

Of course, there are illegal websites that filter many games. They are hit-and-miss and sometimes the video gets removed (a.k.a., they got caught) before the game ends.

Some sports websites (ESPN) may be doing what the broadcast networkd are — requiring one to log in through their cable/satellite provider to view recent programming.

Hulu is just starting to offer no-commercial programming at $12/month. They do say that some of their commmercial free are contractually required to have a couple of commercials at the beginning and/or end of a program.

Amazon Prime is having a special this Friday only: $67 for a year subscription instead of $100.

Unless you live in the boondocks a good antenna will pick up the major networks and provide an excellent picture. Couple that with Roku and you’re set.

Yes, I have a great idea. Stop watching them, stop talking about them, stop spending any money on them. Here’s why:

1) The owners are members of the super-rich Ruling Elite. They increasingly have a globalist agenda to push.
2) The players are ignorant, wildly overpaid pawns who have become increasingly poor role models for youth and society
3) Use your time better. Be a better parent and family member. Volunteer somewhere. Learn to do something you’ve always wanted to do. Join a Bible study.

Yes it is On Demand. But they allow you to watch later in the same day for most Sunday games.

BTW it is dangerous to do so because once you start watching TV without commercials it ruins you and you can't go back. At least that is what happened to me. And boy howdy does it save time. They have a condensed version of each game which shows only the plays in progress no huddles nothing but football. A game is done in an hour. You can watch three games in the time it takes to watch one live broadcast of a game. We love it. More football, less crap. Or you can watch a regular broadcast without commercials and also watch what is called "coaches film" which has different camera angles for most plays.

I quit watching all of them. Great decision. Why to you care about some dudes playing a game? Read, exercise, learn a skill/hobby, volunteer...

How can Roku operate without a cable provider? I’d LOVE to drop xfinity.

I subscribe to MLB network and can watch all of the games except the Sunday night game. You can watch them through ROKU, your computer, tablet and phone. I even watch games through it when I am traveling. There doesn’t seem to be a limit on how many devices you can use all at the same time so my husband can watch when he is at home and I can watch when I am traveling.

You have to check your zip code to see if your team is blacked out in your area though.

Sling has all of the ESPN channels including ESPNU and ESPN-SEC which you can steam through ROKU.

I read you can use an antenna for CBS, NBC, and ABC but I haven’t checked it out yet.

I hate Direct TV. Bad service. After close to 10 years paying for my mother-in-law’s system we needed to upgrade when we got her an HD TV.

Their first window was 6 weeks out and then they cancelled and said it would be another 8 weeks. She lives only 45 miles from Little Rock, Arkansas.

Called them over and over and over and nothing. No change, no budging. So I cancelled them and called Dish. They had someone there the NEXT DAY!

Then I spent 60 days dealing with Direct TV with calls, emails, letters, etc. wanting to know “why we left”. Not one ounce of effort to upgrade her but two months of “why”? Stupid.

I hear you. We now DVR any show we want to watch to fast forward through the commercials.

Unfortunately since most folks do that know they’ve gone to cramming the screen full of stuff during the program to promote, etc.

But since all media since the beginning of time is really about advertising I can’t complain that much. I imagine the first time some caveman chisled his opinion on a wall or rock someone else paid him a pelt to chisel “get your wheels at Olga’s!”
