Windows 10 begins to eat into Windows 7's usage share
Tech World ^ | 09/21/2015 | Gregg Keizer

Although it initially tempted Windows 8.1 users, Windows 10 has increasingly grown its usage share at the expense of the much more widely used Windows 7, an encouraging sign for Microsoft's efforts to convince the old guard to switch.

Using data from Irish analytics company StatCounter, Computerworld calculated the changes in usage share -- a measurement of desktop-and-laptop-driven online activity -- of the various editions of Windows since 10's debut on July 29.

For the first four weeks after Windows 10's release, Windows 8.1 led in losses, beating Windows 7 by a wide margin. During that month-long span, Windows 8.1 accounted for 67% of all declines by it and Windows 7 -- those two editions are the only eligible for the free upgrade to Windows 10 -- while Windows 7 accounted for the remainder, or 33%. In each of those four weeks, Windows 8.1's losses exceeded those of Windows 7.

But that changed in Week 5.

In the last three full weeks, Windows 7's losses were larger than those of Windows 8.1. It was no contest, since Windows 8.1 actually gained usage share in the week ending Sept. 15. (The weeks used by Computerworld ran from Wednesday to Tuesday because Windows 10 was launched on a Wednesday.)

“The updates in question are KB3068708, KB3022345, KB3075249, and KB3080149, and you can find their full description in the box after the jump.”

If you don’t have these updates yet, turn off automatic updates and when you do a manual update only select the ones you want.

I had a friend tell me that he knows people whose computers have been absolutely ruined with Windows 10.

Beyond repair.

They needed whole new computers.

"Did anybody ever answer your question? I would certainly be interested in hearing an answer from someone who knows."

Reading the thread, it seems that two people are telling me how to remove the four codes numbers.

I know how to do it!

My question is, should I remove them?

I, too, know how. That’s easy enough. I still would like to see someone who knows a whole lot more than I is should I and what happens if I do and also what could I expect if I don’t.

Your friends should try a system restore to a date before the windows 10 install, then turn off auto updates.

They already got their new computers.

That’s beyond my computer knowledge and I think of the person who told me, but I’m sure someone will appreciate the information.

Yeah, sure. And did this liar actually manage to detail how an OS damaged a computer beyond repair?

I’m sure the pastor wasn’t lying that the people needed new computers after downloading the Windows 10 OS, but no, he did not go into detail.

This is just perfect .. I have Windows 7; I don’t want to go to 10, because my computer will not hold it; and I cannot afford a new computer with 10 already installed.

Looks like I may have to find a way around this.

So far, I’ve not had any problems with my 7, so I’ll just have to wait it out.

> I’m sure the pastor wasn’t lying that the people needed new computers after downloading the Windows 10 OS...

Two quick comments and an observation.

1. It's essentially impossible for an operating system to break the hardware of a computer. The means by which it might do so exist in theory, but are utterly far-fetched. The people who owned the broken computer, and the pastor, weren't lying, but likely were saying something else, to wit:

2. It might be less expensive, and certainly faster, to simply replace the computer than to repair the scrambled operating system installation. Depending on how you value your time, and in this case certainly paying someone else to fix it, you could be looking at dozens of lost hours and hundreds of dollars.

At that juncture it doesn't matter if the hardware is still perfectly fine, and even though a knowledgeable person like VanDeKoik or myself would gladly strip out the old operating system and put a fresh copy on it and be good as new, that's a path that's unavailable to a lot of people who just use computers and don't want to spend their time fussing with making them work again.

To VDK and myself, a story like yours about Windows 10 "ruining" a computer sounds like a story about a guy who drove his first car until it ran out of gas, and when it coughed to a stop, he declared it "broken" and got another with a full tank. Don't take our cynicism too seriously. :-)

I'm sticking with 7 as long as I can. I've gone back and removed the spyware updates mentioned in previous threads, and am just enjoying a version of Windows I can use easily and quickly, that doesn't fight with me and hide things in weird places, that helps me get my work done.

Win 10 might be a lot better in a few respects than Win 8, but that's like saying getting smacked across the face is better than getting shot.

I'm happy for all the folks who are happy with 8 or 10, bless their hearts. But I ain't going there voluntarily.

I’m sticking with Win 7 Professional, SP1 for now until I hear that there is a better Win 7.

I still have the 10 download in my Internet updates .. but I guess I’ll just go ahead and delete it .. because I will not download it and blow up my entire system.

Don’t know what else to do.

The upgrade is free. If you want to do a full install you have to pay for it.
