A 62-year-old man used his cellphone to call 911 after he was mauled by a bear while walking a neighbor's dog in Alaska woods, authorities said Monday.
Danny High of Funny River, Alaska, was in intensive care at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Hospital spokeswoman Susan Gregg said his family doesn't want details released about his injuries.
High didn't have a gun or bear spray when he was attacked Sunday, authorities said.
"He called 911 to report that he'd been injured in a bear mauling," Central Emergency Services Capt. Terry Bookey said.
Alaska State Troopers described High's injuries as major when he was flown from the scene to Anchorage. Troopers were unable to find the bear.

The bear mauling part is a story.
Using a phone to call 911? is there a new way i dont know about?
The bar should have called 911. It’s the least he could do. Instead he just took off.
I was happy to read the dog is okay.
lol. That bear has no class.
No pepper spray or little bells?
I always wonder about such events as these. If I were hiking in bear woods, it would be prudent to carry bear repellent or my trusty magnum sidearm. But that’s just me.
Yogi was pissed he had no picnic basket
I hope the guy recovers but you just don’t go out and take a walk in Alaska without a gun. Not if you want to live a long time.
Mr. GG2 carried a .454 Casul at all times even around his house when he lived in Wasilla. One morning his business partner got cornered in the front yard by a Moose and rolled under his truck. The Moose was using its front legs to try to scoop him out from under.
If I lived in Alaska, I wouldn't go to the bathroom without a freaking shotgun.
Especially since the bathroom is a phone booth size wooden shack about thirty yards of high brush / deep snow away back behind the house. Based on the show “Buying Alaska” indoor plumbing is the equivalent of having a heated in ground swimming pool in the Lower 48.
Dittos to that! I’m always well armed outside. The Yogi’s are all over the place up here this year. Much more than usual.
