Toyota is being cagey. This patent is only for morphing and stacking the wings. Flight controls & propulsion are two of the big things to follow.
Verrry interrrresting!

The inventors, Robert W. Roe and Umesh N. Gandhi are serious engineers.
Here is another of their related patents, also assigned to Toyota (i.e. their employer)

SMART MATERIAL TRAILING EDGE VARIABLE CHORD MORPHING WING
Gandhi has a ton of patents listed.

Multiple wings mean a lot of drag and center of gravity problems. There are reasons airplanes look the way they do, it isn’t like a million alternatives haven’t been tried.

I don't even want a drone hovering around my roof, let alone a flying-car circling my neighborhood.
It's really fun and exciting to dream about an invention like this...but I hope nothing comes of it in my lifetime.
I pay through the nose for auto insurance mostly because of all the nutcases on the road today.
I don't even want to think of nutcases, pinheads and drunks flying the friendly skies of America......at all. Yikes!!!

“Recent flights of the Toyota Advanced Aircraft (or TAA-1) at Mojave, along with some cryptic comments by Toyota about their aviation projects, has generated speculation that Toyota may be resurrecting the idea of entering the general aviation market.”
From 2008, but nevertheless interesting.

Shouldn’t Mitsubishi be doing this. I think they’ve done aviation related work in the past.
