Apple unveils the all-new Apple TV with Siri Remote, tvOS, and Apple TV App Store
Mac Daily News ^ | Wednesday, September 9, 2015

Posted on 09/09/2015 4:31:47 PM PDT by Swordmaker

Apple today announced the all-new Apple TV, bringing a revolutionary experience to the living room based on apps built for the television. Apps on Apple TV let you choose what to watch and when you watch it. The new Apple TV’s remote features Siri, so you can search with your voice for TV shows and movies across multiple content providers simultaneously.

The all-new Apple TV is built from the ground up with a new generation of high-performance hardware and introduces an intuitive and fun user interface using the Siri Remote. Apple TV runs the all-new tvOS™ operating system, based on Apple’s iOS, enabling millions of iOS developers to create innovative new apps and games specifically for Apple TV and deliver them directly to users through the new Apple TV App Store.

“There has been so much innovation in entertainment and programming through iOS apps, we want to bring that same excitement to the television,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services, in a statement. “Apps make the TV experience even more compelling for viewers and we think apps represent the future of TV.”

The new Siri Remote dramatically simplifies how you select, scroll and navigate through your favorite content while bringing unique interactivity to the new Apple TV by using a glass touch surface that handles both small, accurate movements as well as big, sweeping ones. Adding touch to Apple TV creates a natural, connected experience, even if the TV screen is on the other side of the room. Developers can take advantage of the built-in accelerometer and gyroscope, and the touch surface on the Siri Remote to create games and other app experiences that have never been seen on TV before.

With Siri, you can use your voice to search TV shows and movies by title, genre, cast, crew, rating or popularity, making it easy to say things like “Show me New Girl,” “Find the best funny movies from the ’80s,” “Find movies with Seth Rogan” and “Find popular TV shows for kids.” Apple TV will search iTunes and popular apps from Netflix, Hulu, HBO and Showtime, displaying all the ways the resulting TV shows and movies can be played. Siri also offers playback control and on-screen navigation, as well as quick access to sports, stock and weather information.*

tvOS is the new operating system for Apple TV, and the tvOS SDK provides tools and APIs for developers to create amazing experiences for the living room the same way they created a global app phenomenon for iPhone and iPad. The new, more powerful Apple TV features the Apple-designed A8 chip for even better performance so developers can build engaging games and custom content apps for the TV. tvOS supports key iOS technologies including Metal, for detailed graphics, complex visual effects and Game Center, to play and share games with friends.

Pricing & Availability

The new Apple TV will be available at the end of October starting at $149 (US) for a 32GB model and $199 (US) for a 64GB model from Apple.com, Apple’s retail stores and select Apple Authorized Resellers. A new Xcode beta is available for developers today that includes the tvOS SDK at developer.apple.com/xcode/downloads. Developers can request an Apple TV developer kit at developer.apple.com/tvos/.

*Siri availability and functionality varies by country. Subscription required for some content.

Being an Apple cultist you always thought Steve Jobs came up with this. I immediately doubted this. So I checked out and it came from Wayne Gretzky.
Wayne Gretzky should be out promoting Samsung devices. Perhaps he already is. He was a well known celebrity in Japan and Korea...back in the day. IIR correctly he even did a few TV adverts over there.

Is it true that he said "If you see a stylus, they blew it." back in 2010?

No, not quite. The accurate quote is: "If you see a stylus or a Finder, then they blew it." Still referencing the need for such a pointing gadget or file system to USE the device. It has nothing to do with an accessory which adds functionality for special purposes.

Pathetic. More misdirection so you can keep shilling for Apple.

You are a joke of a man.

So you devolve to insults and ad hominem attacks. . . the last refuge of the man with no logic, no arguments, and no facts. Sad.

Oh horsecrap you are trying to find an out knowing you blathered without knowing what you were talking about. You claimed the were getting out of the hardware business and now you are trying to morph it into they are just gonna put their name on someone else's stuff. Yet Kindle is still the number one selling ebook reader.

I mean using your logic then we can say Apple got out of the hardware business long ago when they had foxconn start making their stuff.

I am not trying to "find an out" because I don't need one. You are delusional if you think I need one.

I think that Amazon will be having their brand name products designed and manufactured by third-parties from now on. They got their heads handed to them with the Amazon Fire Phone fiasco. . . and most of the tech punditry is claiming their hardware department is "struggling." So, Mad Dawgg, this opinion is not just mine, although from the evidence, it sure does look that way. I linked you to articles on the layoffs more recent than your rumor articles about new hardware.

You are the one hanging your hat on unsubstantiated rumors and expanding the statement I made from just the Amazon Fire TV into tablets and other hardware, not me. I did not ever bring those products into this discussion. . . but since YOU did with your talk of the new $50 tablet before Christmas, I analyzed what they have to be doing to be able to afford to do that.

If you have a problem with an EXPERIENCED ECONOMIST and EX-CEO telling you what he thinks is going on from the evidence YOU presented, well that just too damn bad!

No, you cannot say that Apple got out of the hardware business which makes you more delusional. . . because Apple DESIGNS their hardware and manages it's manufacture, and sells hardware as their primary business. Amazon does not. It is not their primary business. Amazon is a RESELLER and a CONSIGNMENT SELLER.

FoxConn builds to Apple's specific designs including all engineering and Apple even specific chips and processors. Amazon does not. If Amazon were to continue designing their hardware, then they would not be laying off their engineers. Apple is building a huge new building to house their engineers, capable of holding 30,000 employees.

Have you ever been in business? As for your claim that Kindle is the number one e-book reader, your own links claim that Amazon Tablets, which now are the Kindle, only claimed 1% of the market. The facts just don't bear you out. Amazon has never published ANY of their sales numbers for these products. Frankly, we simply don't know.

By-the-way, I am still waiting for a factual response on the Samsung S. Pen. . . In what way does that button affect the use of the stylus when it is being used as a stylus on the surface of the tablet? Does it in any way change to quality, color, stroke, appearance of the line being drawn? Please inform us if it does SOMETHING other than what I have outlined in other posts. . . quit blowing it off, or admit it doesn’t.

"Have you ever been in business? As for your claim that Kindle is the number one e-book reader, your own links claim that Amazon Tablets, which now are the Kindle, only claimed 1% of the market."

Hahahah

And wrong yet again

Kindle ereaders are not tablets They are gadgets like the Kindle Paperwhite. Tablets are the Fire line, and the Kindle Fire tablet.

How many times have you been wrong in this thread alone?

You claim Amazon is getting out of the hardware business but they just introduced the new Kindle paperwhite. And are bringing out a 50 buck tablet for Christmas reported by WSJ.

See the problem is you got caught and then had to gin up a scenario that makes your false statement true by changing definitions and slicing semantics.

And you really want to try the economist card again? hahaha that brings up some fun memories of you trying to explain to us how the total cost of sale of buying a new iphone by trading in an old iphone did not include the price you paid for the old iphone (which includes down payment and contract costs) because you realized the math didn't work on your claim that you pay less that way.

Though I can see why you are an EX-CEO being you can't do simple math.

hahahaha this is getting good now. Sword is becoming unhinged and grasping.

BTW your logic sez if a company does not make their own stuff and farms it out then they are out of the hardware business. Face it Sword you've FUDed yourself into a corner, and it is so fun to watch your squirm.

Next you will be telling us that if a Pilot's iPad powers down because an app glitches it has nothing to do with Apple even though they designed the ipad OS in such a way that an App can power down the iPad and ground flights.

Oh wait, you already tried that laugher hahahaha

Proving once again your delusional nature with this response. Let’s summarize the exchange:

Me: Haha - the iPencil? Seriously?

You: Yeah, but it changes the quality of the line being drawn! It’s aaaaaamazing!

Me: Omigod... for real??? That’s soooooo awesome! Sign me up for TEN! Product of the year! Not. I’m happy with the stylus I get with my Note 3.

You: Your stylus doesn’t do *anything*, it’s just a dumb stick.

Me: Not true - it has a button and some limited functionality, but just enough for a normal user to care about. Only 0.1% of users - artists - are going to give a crap about the iStylus’s AWESOME ability to change the quality of the line.

You: YOUR STYLUS HAS NO FUNCTIONALITY! YOU CAN’T PROVE IT DOES!

Me: Uh... there’s a button right on it.

You: YEAH BUT YOU HAVEN’T PROVED IT CAN CHANGE THE QUALITY OF THE LINE BEING DRAWN! ADMIT THAT IT DOESN’T!

Me: Uh...

You’re right. It doesn’t do the thing I mocked about the iPen earlier. You got me.

(You’re a sick, sick man.)

Only in your mistaken mind. I know exactly how I bought and traded iPhones and kept prices of my phones low. YOU haven't a clue how total cost of ownership worked. The math worked. You are the one who couldn't grasp the simple math. You kept insisting the entire cost of the contract had to be included even though EVERY cellular phone has to pay such contracts costs. . . no matter which phone you selected. I accounted for those differences but you couldn't see that. YOU are blind to total cost accounting.

Kindle Readers have been being rooted for years and made into tablets, Mad Dawgg. They are essentially crippled Android tablets. I am suggesting the evidence shows they are getting out of the business of designing their own hardware in favor of reference designs from Chinese manufacturers who can do it easier and cheaper than can Amazon can on their own. I am not the only one suggesting this scenario. It is a perfectly viable means of doing business.

Please point to one published statistic from Amazon on the number of e-readers, Amazon Fire products sold of any type. You will not find it. They have NEVER, ever published such statistics and, in fact, have like you avoided answering any direct questions.

Questions like "Have you ever been in business?" Frankly, I doubt it. You don't seem to grasp any of the nuances of running one.

You claim Amazon is getting out of the hardware business but they just introduced the new Kindle paperwhite. And are bringing out a 50 buck tablet for Christmas reported by WSJ.

Where is your evidence of that "50 buck tablet" before Christmas other than rumors from unknown "knowledgable people"? I've told you that anyone of any competence analyzing that claim has to come to the conclusion that if they ARE going to release an Amazon Tablet for that kind of price, it has to be a "reference" tablet made by a no-name Chinese manufacturer who will put Amazon's name on it and load Amazon's fork of Android into it. That's the only way it can be manufactured and sold for that price and still have a reasonable quality product. Even then it's going to be pretty junky. That is just the economics of the process.

You again have to denigrate me. . . attacking my expertise in a field you obviously know nothing about. You are the one who is dancing around trying to find something that will stick.

As for the iPad Jeppesen Flight bag, it DID NOT SHUT DOWN THE IPAD. Which I told you at the time of the event. Jeppesen admitted they goofed and their software could not handle a duplicate map of Reagan National Airport which a technician had accidentally included in the database. . . causing their software to blank the screen. The solution was to delete and re-install the software. It was NOT a problem with iOS, nor did the app "power down" the iPad.

"The errant extra map was in the Jeppesen digital flight bag app used by American's pilots on iPads since 2013, according to Michael Pound, a spokesman for Jeppesen. "The cause of the issue was a single duplicate chart for Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C., in the chart database we supply to American. The version of the app they use is not able to reconcile duplicate charts, which caused the app to become unresponsive for those pilots who had 'favorited' National."— Errant App Caused iPad Problems for Some American Airlines Pilots

YOU refused to believe it was not a systemic problem and that Apple was covering it up and lying about the issue. YOU were delusional in the face of all the subsequent reports from the airline, Apple, and Jeppesen about what had happened.

Interesting. What's you source on that? I didn't see any reference to that quote that puts it into that context.

The context is that all other touch screen devices of the period REQUIRED styluses for any detailed work, Tacticalogic. The iPhone was the first that did not, because it was designed as a multi-touch device and being capacitance touch was FAR MORE accurate than any that came before it. If the device required a stylus to use the touch screen for anything except gross touches, it was a failure from the get go. Steve Jobs original objection to styluses with devices was spoken in January 2008 in the presentation of the original iPhone:

"Who wants a stylus? You have to get 'em, put 'em away, you lose 'em, yuck. Nobody wants a stylus. So let's not use a stylus. We're going to use the best pointing device in the world. We're going to use a pointing device that we're all born with - born with ten of them. We're going to use our fingers. We're going to touch with our fingers." Steve Jobs — Keynote presentation of the new iPhone, January 9, 2007

(You’re a sick, sick man.)

Personal insults and ad hominem attacks after a lot of blather still avoiding a direct answer about exactly WHAT your Samsung S Pen can do besides draw a simple line and tick boxes to make selections. I've challenged you to do so and you've danced around avoiding answering. . . and made insults and thrown spit wads. You obviously can't answer.

Now you make up a fictional discourse between us in which, of course, you look like the sane one. . . but you are not. YOU are the one who refuses to answer questions while I have been forthcoming with truthful responses. Yours are based on your delusional biased opinions, with no facts to back them presented with loads of snark.

What does your vaunted button do? You still have not answered. I've asked you politely to tell us what it does that cannot be done without the stylus button. PLEASE? I have not said your stylus has no functionality, I have said I can find no functionality for the damn button that affects the stylus's drawing or tapping abilities on the tablet or phone. Trust me, I've searched the web documentation of the Samsung S Pen trying to find something. The ball's in your court to show us what it is.

It certainly is nowhere nearly as functional as the new Apple Pencil:

Here's a glimpse from Apple:

Each of these lines was drawn with a single stroke of the Apple Pencil.

Jony Ive, Apple Chief Designer, explains how the Apple Pencil works

I have done graphics art for pay in the past, sometimes using a Wacom pad and stylus, which at ~$1600, will cost you 77% to 36% more than the combination of an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil. I can think of nothing close to $99 that can do what this Apple Pencil can do anywhere near that price point. . . or as easily with a single hand. Yet you ignorantly sit there and denigrate it as just a stylus like everyone else gives away with their phones and tablets? "Just a stylus?" Not by a long shot.

Now the paid marketer who claims to be super rich, an EX-CEO, and published author also claims to have done graphics art for pay on a Wacom pad. Oh, yes, that makes perfect sense, because someone who claims to deck their girlfriend out with no less than 30k in jewelry before leaving the house would certainly need to moonlight as a graphic artist.

Dude... your web of lies is starting to tangle up.

Now the paid marketer who claims to be super rich

You've been told multiple times that I am not a "paid marketer." You are truly an idiot to keep running that lead balloon up. You've been repeatedly told that I maintain the Apple interest PING list on FreeRepublic. That's all. There are more than 700 members on that list who have ALL personally asked to be on that list. Many of them have validated what I do in these threads. YOU and your ilk are a itty-bitty, teeny-weeny (apparently like a portion of your anatomy) ignorant but noisy irritant who just hate Apple. There are, at most, about twelve of you members of the Anti-Apple Hate Brigade whose hobby it seems is to tag-team these threads to denigrate Apple and insult me and other Apple users.

Now, as for your latest SNARKY, insulting laden reply.

I've done many of things in my life, bolobaby. I will soon be 68. I've been called a modern renaissance man by people who know me because I'm interested in everything and can converse on any and every subject from Microbiology to Cosmology to archaeology to Theology to Theosophy to Philosophy intelligibly because I am informed on almost everything because I am extremely well read. I am a voracious reader and I retain what I read and learn. I also know how to cut through the BS and dig to the raw data and analyze that.

That may be a lot to cram into a fifty year career, but I kept busy otherwise i'd have been bored out of my skull.

Do you see ANY need for me being a paid marketing agent for anyone in there?

On the other hand, there are some things I am not good at. . . for example, I have a black thumb as anything I try to grow dies horribly, and although I have built several museum quality wooden ship models, any model airplane I've built to try to fly, or off the shelf helicopter has crashed and been destroyed on the first flight, and although I was an excellent musician, and can arrange, interpret, and transpose music on the fly, I haven't an ounce of the ability to create a new piece of music. I can create prose, and have a great imagination for story lines, I am not good at writing poetry. Those are blind spots in my talents.

Now, "Moonlighting." Who's moonlighting? I have done graphic art work and was PAID to do it. I don't do many things for FREE. One of the few things I do do for free is manage the Ping list on FreeRepublic because my fellow Freepers have ASKED ME TO DO IT and I have agreed to do it, despite asshats like you.

I am a business man. I did the graphic art work as part of my cross platform consulting business for a client and I CHARGED money for my services (and yes, I got very well paid for my work!). I've taken art classes in college and one of my parody pieces on FreeRepublic was picked up and published in the book on bringing down Dan Rather with my copyright and credit. (The author of the book, one our fellow Freepers graciously gave me a signed copy of the book.) So what. It was not something I did full time for a living, but something I did as an adjunct of my business. Have you ever been in business? (Another question you have been dodging.) As a business person, you do what is necessary to keep your business going. When I was managing the two gun shops, I did the store displays art work and display ads for the newspapers. I also was the publicity director for the Choral group as well as a singer and did both the newspaper advertising display ads and programs, including covers. . . including the one for when we appeared in Carnegie Hall for the 100th Anniversary concert with the Manhattan Philharmonic Orchestra, I've also done wedding announcements and other small stuff for friends. I am talented and when people asked me to do it, I did it, sometimes for pay. When my business's graphics artist was on vacation, the artwork needed to be done, so I did the work. (Frankly, my work was better than hers.) The client was extremely happy. Again, so what?

Is there anything FALSE in the $1600 price of that Wacom Tablet and Wacom stylus? The one I used was less expensive because it was several years ago and prices were less. If I recall correctly, it was in the neighborhood of $900 or so and worked with one of our Macs. How does that impact the truth of what I wrote? I used it. I owned it as part of my business' equipment. YOU can't believe facts when presented to you because YOU would LIE, and do, to make your points.

I have not lied. You just cannot believe the truth when you see it. You are interpreting me to be "super rich" which I am not. I am comfortably well off. . . as is my girlfriend. That does not make us "super rich" except in your delusional, apparently LIBERAL, LEFT WING mind who cannot abide people who like me and my girlfriend have made a success in life and can afford the finer things. . . especially including Apple products. We don't have to lie about our CVs.

Now, about my girlfriend's jewelry. If it's any of your SNARKY business, sometimes it's worth more than $30K.

Hell, we went to the Vampire Halloween Ball in Roseville, CA, a couple of years with the them of Dark Shadows as Count Dracula and his Consort, Countess Katerina of Transylvania, and my girlfriend was wearing over $100K in jewelry. If you look, you will find us there among the attendees. Our photographs are there (#81 on Yelp). We just got her a Sapphire and Diamond pendant (2.07 carats of diamonds, 16 carats of matched sapphires, and 21 grams of 18K yellow gold) just last weekend valued at around $12,000 (we didn't pay that much for it. . . got it at quite a bargain!) while we were on a weekend trip to the Seattle area for the holiday.

Too bad you can't fly to SeaTac on a lark and buy such things. . . and are stuck buying junk costume jewelry. If you're ever in Seattle, you might want to check out the place where we got the pendant and pick up a gift for Mrs. bolobaby: Nique Design Jewelers, 201 Bellevue Way NE, Bellevue, Washington. The CEO of Alaska Airlines uses them exclusively and featured them in their airline's magazine in an article written by the CEO, he was so impressed by their unique pieces. We just sort of accidentally found it on Monday afternoon while driving around killing time before turning in our rental car. Hint, take lots of money. I don't recall seeing anything on display for under three grand. But then, we didn't look at the cookie cutter stuff, although they didn't seem to have to much of that kind of jewelry in this store.

Nice town, but wouldn't want to live there. Too many liberals. Like San Francisco, they don't allow left turns. Why? My theory is that the town is so liberal you simply can't go any further left.

Another strange thing. . . I think that during the four days we were there, I could count the times I saw these Liberal pukes use turn signals on the fingers of two hands. It seems to be a local aversion to that little lever on the steering wheel. Also the Freeway speed limit is 60 MPH everywhere. They seem to obey that one. No speeding. . . but I think they have speed cameras on the Freeways. . . and cameras for their Diamond lanes, too.

Had dinner at the restaurant in the Space Needle. Total bill with tip was $270 for two. Food was mediocre Cisco re-constituted microwaved crap, but service was great. . . and you are really paying for the view. If they would hire a chef, it would be packed every night and be worth it.

The Boeing Factory Tour is fascinating. . . and we went to the EMP to see the Science Fiction and LooneyToons museums. The RockNRoll section was a bonus. . . as was the exhibit of all the Star Wars costumes from the six movies.

My girlfriend collects original Erté (Romain de Tirtoff) Bronze sculptures, jewelry, and Serigraphs. He was the principle costume designer from the Ziegfield Follies and Folies Bergère and one of the primary originators of the Art Deco movement.

Erté's "Heat" — My girlfriend also owns the Serigraph of "Heat" as well

She did not know that many of the Star Wars costumes, especially the women's, were inspired by Erté! She was in seventh heaven.

I was just coming over to this thread to post a link to a thread I just started, Mad Dawgg,

Amazon's answer to Apple TV: a Fire TV box with Alexa and 4K video support .

They had been having priblems with functionality and lackluster sales and they had been out of stock since June. Amazon had just laid off dozens of their design engineers. I linked to articles coming to similar conclusions.

Swordmaker is a paid Apple marketer, which he vehemently denies. Frankly, if he’s not, that’s even scarier. Anyone who shills for Apple the way he does *should* be getting paid. If they’re not, they have the worst case of delusional product fanboy-itis in history and should probably be institutionalized.
