So I was assaulted downtown Denver Sunday night. I ended up in the ER but was released later that night. I am fine, dealing with a concussion and some needed orthodontic work, but other than some soreness I'm ok. The good news is the police caught the guy and he is now facing felony assault charges. He hit me from behind with a bottle knocking me out and I hit my head on the curb (6 stitches).
The bad news is the swelling from my forehead has now shifted down to my eyes. The are puffy and appear bruised (black eyes) but there is no damage to the surrounding tissue. But it is rather ugly.
Any recommendations for getting the puffiness to go down and the black and blue to go away?
I am sorry for your injuries, and equally sorry for some of the comments here. A sack of frozen peas, gently applied, might help.
When I was assaulted by an “unarmed teen” several years ago, he threw me on the pavement, injuring my spine. My purse strap was across my body, so the creep kept yanking at it, while kicking me in the head, until the strap mercifully broke, and he ran off. I got a concussion and he
darn near broke my neck.
This guy had actually gotten out of a car, while I had been on foot.
Word to the wise—be wary of walkers AND drivers around you!
A kind person across the street got plate number, and the perp was caught, but not until after I had to argue with the cops, who thought a purse snatching (technically, strong arm robbery) wasn’t worth their time to pursue—even with a plate number, pointing to an identity! —because they had “more serious” crimes to deal with.
Rant off. You really have my empathy.
Be well, and be safe.
I had a LEO friend tell me that today. He even got me to email the Peter Boyle show with some of the facts to see if they wanted to cover anything.
Have you heard of Bryan Stowe (sp?), the Giants fan at Dodger Stadium a few years ago who was sucker punched from behind like that, and barely survived (and still suffers extensive brain damage)? You are lucky to still have as much function as you have. Prayers up for you.
Maybe some good eye doctors will answer your specific questions. I would think no heat, just some gentle cool packs on your eyes, something light. Maybe even the proverbial bags of peas, rotated out for cold. I’m sure time will help.
For light pure cream on any skin problem coconut oil has one ingredient and is safe and has some antibiotic properties. It’s very healthy taken in to the tissues too.
Epsom salts baths for painful body (if not open wounds).
Lots and lots of rest. Pain pills only in the second half of the day, trying to wean them to night only and then quickly as you can wean off of them. You want as much true non drugged sleep as possible for your body to do all the healing work.
Vitamins D, C, and E. Especially D. No smoking or drinking alcohol... If you aren’t taking pain meds, and a little alcoholic drink helps your painful evenings, go ahead.
I am sorry this happened to you. Hang in there.
Aw, don’t worry about it. I knew you werent being mean. Yes I am getting my CCW. In fact, I have been to the class. I just have not received my paperwork that I can take to the Sheriff’s office. That should come by Friday.
As always for me, day late, dollar short.
Thanks for the well wishes.
Denver proper is one of those “gun free zones” in CO.
rub salt in your eyes, they will become so red that people won’t even hardly notice your black eyes
This might make you feel better about missing the concert:

Joan Jett probably watched (innocent on that account because she was underage and probably intoxicated) and covered up and even mocked her bandmate’s rape. I went to high school with Joan and I have always liked her up until this article which I believe. I knew Fowler and this whole thing is very believable.
Hey this article will distract you from the pain; it’s pretty riveting.
Check out the hints here.

Whenever I got a bruise as a kid, mom always reached for witch hazel quickly. I still do that before I use a cold compress, and it has worked well for the most part. I still bruise easily. Guess I’m not so careful. Witch hazel is always in my first aid kit.

Gosh, you now I think I heard something about that on one of the shows recently. They need to keep hammering on it. Mayor is a specially protected minority though.
Start practicing situational awareness as well. A gun sounds like it would have done no good in this scenario.
Don’t have any health advice to offer, but I hope that you heal up soon.
Just wanted to say that FYI, and for anyone else who might see this, it sounds like you got caught in a trap. You were alert and acted as your training taught you, but that training was used against you. Whether intentionally or not.
If that seems too much to believe, consider the altercation that was headed your way as being something akin to a domestic disturbance. What often happens to outsiders or cops who interfere in a domestic disturbance?
Either way, you reacted to the altercation and while your attention was diverted, someone took advantage of the opportunity to clobber you.
Similarly, in Europe, it is customary for one person to bump into you, and while you are distracted (and discomfited), the accomplice picks your pocket.
Not trying to blame you, I just think that everyone should be alert and aware.
I hope that you’re feeling better soon. Best wishes.
Cold for the first 36 hrs then hot, but be careful of the eyes themselves.
You do know that telling all of us whereabouts in Denver you were assaulted would be a useful kindness?
Not that I ever planned to go to "Marijuanaville" any time soon, for any reason!
Goodness! Hope you recover soon. Deadful!
Why aren’t you asking your doctor these questions?
Yeah, I do try to practice situational awareness. Again, I was worried about pick pockets and had my son trailing me by a couple of paces.
I guess I was prepared for the wrong crime. My “intelligence” told me that the problem was not surprise assault from behind but theft. All in all, I probably should have checked up on what the actual problems with down town crime were, and not relied on my prior assessments. My LEO friends have said that the down town situation has changed considerably in the last few months.
At the moment, I dont have a doctor. He moved out of state and out of the local practice. I did not find this out until yesterday when I booked the appointment to have the stitches removed.
Hard for me to remember the exact location due to the concussion memory issues. I did park in the garage at the 410 building on 17th. I then walked to the 16 street mall, crossed over and then turned left heading towards the Capital Building. Maybe a block or two after that????
I do know that here in Connecticut, you can call the ER and the doc will answer any questions you may have, relating to your injury.
They may be able to lead you a new doc to get started with. I wish you the best of luck and hope you heal quickly!
