Earlier this week Steve Deace wrote an excellent Washington Times column suggesting that conservatives face a fundamental choice when confronted with the 17-person GOP presidential field and the emergence of Donald Trump as the leader in the polls. Deace said the choice is whether conservatives are going to make their peace with Trump as the standard-bearer for the movement despite his various deficiencies and lack of conservative pedigree, or to consolidate their support behind another candidate in the race.
Deace has endorsed Ted Cruz as that candidate, and Ill admit in an element of full disclosure (as readers of this column have doubtless surmised by now) that Im moving in the same direction.
But since its still early enough to speculate, and since during the current silly season the idea of Trump as the GOP standard bearer is a little more entertaining and ripe for spitballing than the idea of Cruz (yes, its also a good deal more terrifying), in this piece well go the opposite direction and discuss how The Donald might entice the conservatives to which Deace is referring aboard his bandwagon.

It would be appropriate to cite at least a couple of specifics.
Surely you've seen them yourself.
There have been posts calling for Trump to be installed as a dictator to "get things done".
I've seen statements from his fans that the Constitution is done and we're going to have to toss it aside.
I've read more than one post saying Trump should govern by illegal executive order, like Obama.
No, I haven't seen posts like that, but if I did I would certainly engage aggressively.
Folks like that don't belong on FR. Hell, they don't belong in America.
Please ping me if you see such again?
Donald Trump is the donor class personified. He just says he's not, and otherwise sensible people snap to believe him.
Crony capitalist. Known liberal. Suddenly a populist conservative because he says so?
Not a chance.
Who said he's a conservative besides Trump?
Only the deluded would believe that.
Walk by the memorial every day at work. It’s beautiful. Really, Trump has been pro-Vet forever...
I will definitely do so...and I agree with you.
Have a good Saturday evening, Mariner.
You think he will take New York?
Unlikely...NY state goes as NYC goes, and the stupidity and liberalism of the good citizens cannot be overestimated. He may make it close as he will probably take LI and upstate, which has been going liberal for a few decades. If he is truly doing well with Asians he will up his percentage in Queens, but I don’t see him taking NY overall..
