Earlier this week Steve Deace wrote an excellent Washington Times column suggesting that conservatives face a fundamental choice when confronted with the 17-person GOP presidential field and the emergence of Donald Trump as the leader in the polls. Deace said the choice is whether conservatives are going to make their peace with Trump as the standard-bearer for the movement despite his various deficiencies and lack of conservative pedigree, or to consolidate their support behind another candidate in the race.
Deace has endorsed Ted Cruz as that candidate, and Ill admit in an element of full disclosure (as readers of this column have doubtless surmised by now) that Im moving in the same direction.
But since its still early enough to speculate, and since during the current silly season the idea of Trump as the GOP standard bearer is a little more entertaining and ripe for spitballing than the idea of Cruz (yes, its also a good deal more terrifying), in this piece well go the opposite direction and discuss how The Donald might entice the conservatives to which Deace is referring aboard his bandwagon.

“Why are so many people falling for this pseudo-conservative?”
Because he is willing to SEAL THE BORDER and is now proving that he is the ONLY CANDIDATE that can win in November over the Democrats.
Other than that, I too am perplexed.
Whatsamatter with that? It worked for Pedro.
Yeah, Trump says something now that doesn’t match what he said just after the 2012 Election calling the idea of deportation “Maniacal” and Republicans “Mean-Spirited”.
If you’re going to be a single-issue voter, at least do your homework. Just because someone says they will do something when their history shows otherwise should raise red flags.
And he is not the ONLY CANDIDATE that can win in November. That’s just faulty reasoning with no evidence whatsoever.

There is an unorthodox way that we could have two republican presidential nominees and a VP nominee.
Trump could hold a presser with Cruz and Carson and announce that they were running as a team.
Trump would serve two years and a day as president and then turn it over to Cruz. Cruz could then theoretically serve for 10 years 2+4+4.
This would consolidate the support for Trump, Cruz and Carson in one package.
Others could join in the fun and agree to accept various posts in the administration.
It would be a political bombshell... and it would work.
I just bet that Trump would be satisfied with two years as president and I bet strong conservatives would be pleased at the possibility of 10 years of Cruz. More moderate types would like Carson as VP.
This team would have all the cash they need to run, they would owe no favors to anyone. They could always appear together and work audiences as a team... they each have mighty skills and together they would be awesome. Cruz and Carson could help keep Trump from coming off the rails..lol
You’ll never support anyone but yourself.
L
Oh, the three man ticket would have
-Trump..The whitest rich man in America..lol the fair-haired boy
-Cruz.. The brilliant Hispanic
-Carson.. the all black brain surgeon
Whadda ticket!
When Trump overwhelmingly wins the first 4 primary/caucuses and most of the super-Tuesday ones and Cruz drops out and throws his support to the Donald, that will pretty much take care of itself.
That is certainly an unconventional idea and this has been anything but a conventional campaign so far.
But he is our last, best hope to break the stranglehold of the donor class and the Chamber of Commerce.
And I, for one, see that as the PRINCIPAL objective of the 2016 campaign.
It's either us or them.
Disobey that law and you'll find yourself jailed. If you resist, you'll find yourself shot.
It is, at least, de facto law and a vast majority of people, even those who oppose it's outcome, consider it law writ.
So, go tipping your hat at windmills and continue to deny the reality of our legal construct.
See where it gets you.
There's not a candidate in the race that that can't be said about.
ESPECIALLY the Republicans.
And I'll include ALL Republicans.
Its interesting to imagine what if Trump was not in this race.
Would Cruz have rocketed into the lead?
Both Bush and Cruz are essentially tied at this point. Would they have split the 30%+ that is now Trumps?
“BTW when did enforcing immigration laws become just a conservative idea?”
I think you inadvertantly stumbled on to the problem. It has mostly been an “idea” of both parties.
And a idea is all it will ever be because they have no real intention of stopping illegals.
Conservative’s, not to be confused with progressives or the GOPe, would enforce existing law.
Or, we are told they would enforce existing laws.

My original post was that I can't and won't support Trump, because his conception of what American government is is backward.
But when I start seeing posts like yours, I'm going to have to start believing that the man is more than just wrong. Perhaps he's very dangerous as well.
Oh, sorry!
I’ve wondered that, too. If Trump makes a serious error, we may find out yet. At this stage anything could happen.

I don't think Trump himself is dangerous. But some of the concepts and desires and flights of fancy I've seen from his most ardent followers, well...if they were put into action as desired, we would no longer have a Constitution nor a republic.
So in that sense, I understand what you mean.
It's one reason, among many, why I'll never support Trump. A candidacy which inspires lunacy in some corners isn't a good thing, and it confirms my decision for me.
I don’t foresee Crux dropping out, but at some point an alliance could be formed. This race has had a lot of interesting dynamics.
