James Bond writer says Adrian Lester would be a better Bond than Idris Elba; Twitter explodes; Update: Horowitz apologizes
Folks are furious today at Anthony Horowitz, the British novelist chosen by Ian Flemings family to continue write James Bond novels, and some comments he made about the appropriateness of black actor Idris Elba as the next James Bond. First up, here is what Horowitz is quoted as saying in an interview he gave to the Daily Mail:

Can hardly wait for the all caucasian Harlem Globetrotters 2015
Casino Royale is the first book.
“I think Adrian Paul would make an excellent 007. There can be only one!”
That would be a logical choice.
Oh I know this. I read all of the original Ian Fleming books back in the 70s :)
You have a point. But I’m just looking at the actor’s work.
*L* We didn’t even get a TV till 1957...I missed that Bond....
Thanks...
I started reading them in the early ‘60’s....
Loved Adrian Lester in Hustle, definitely would like to see him in something else. Not sure about bond but he plays the upper crust ‘men want to be him’ type.
Aston Martin? The new James Catlin Bond will be driving a Prius.
Actually, if you want to see the true HERO of the Black Lives Matter movement, watch National Security, starring Martin Lawrence. That character IS the Black Lives Matter movement. He allows a police officer who is falsely portrayed as a brutal racist to go to jail just to prove a point. I’d seen the movie many years ago but I watched it the other night, and I was like “wait a minute, those people have been taking notes from this movie.”
If you haven’t seen the Daniel Craig movies, you’re missing some of the best. He’s very good as Bond.
Libs HATED Mickey Spillane’s Mike Hammer as well. They even called it ‘fascist’.
I suppose they find both too plebeian and too stilted into “right and wrong” what with Western imperialist hegemony, patriarchal power trips and all...
When is Hollywood going to make Shaft white?
If she made out with Eva Green and Olga Kkurylenko, I'd be shaken and stirred.
They already made Bond’s best friend in the CIA, Felix Leiter, into a black character (somehow it sounds strange to me that a black guy would be named “Felix”). Does he get to keep the job if Bond goes black as well?
Looking all the casting choices they’re suggesting for Bond, it sounds like Hollywood is hellbent on casting someone who is even LESS faithful to the source material than Daniel Craig. (Shades of how they managed to make an even LESS faithful Little Orphan Annie than the New Deal luvin’/sing along with FDR 1970s Broadway musical.)
Damn you, Hollywood. Please don’t force me to hope Craig stays on.
(BTW, why is it so big in Hollywood to keep turning white characters into black guys? Aren’t Hispanics the big demographic to pander to now? Blacks don’t even make up a big percentage of movie goers. Hollywood seem a bit behind the times)
You need to get to know more black Americans.
Gadzooks Billy, Billy, Billy-- I'd... take on the role--
But been there... done that--
However, there is hope on the horizon:
It... is on youtube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Uy5gunqCAA
But be warned, the film was Americanized in 1954 with Barry Nelson playing "Jimmy" Bond--

It never particularly bothered me about Leiter being played by a Black actor. In Connery’s comeback, “Never Say Never Again”, Bernie Casey played Leiter, and did an excellent job as an equal to Bond (previous Leiters were generally played by desultory actors, with only Jack Lord being a stand-out in “Dr. No” and David Hedison in his two turns). I thought Casey was the best overall.
As for the notion of Idris Elba playing Bond, why not come up with an original film and character specially-tailored for him now that they can parlay into a 3 or 4 film series ? Is Hollyweird so completely bankrupt of new ideas that they’re trying to shoehorn a Black actor into the role of a White Scot secret agent ? It’s so ridiculous they might as well get Gabourey Sidibe to take over the Jason Bourne character.
