Justin Wilson was airlifted to a nearby hospital for a head injury after a crash in the closing laps of Sunday's IndyCar race at Pocono Raceway. He suffered a severe head injury and is in a coma and critical condition. The crash occurred with 21 laps to go when race leader Sage Karam spun in turn 1 and debris from his car hit Justin Wilson. Wilson then, seemingly unconscious, veered off and had a head-on collision with the inside wall, which was protected by a SAFER barrier.

He’s probably the nicest guy on the circuit.
And the tallest.

Thanks, and sorry for going off here on the other Justin Wilson. He was the only JW that I knew of.
“Justin Boyd Wilson (31 July 1978 in Sheffield[1]) is a British professional open-wheel driver. He currently competes part-time in the IndyCar Series, driving the No. 25 Honda for Andretti Autosport. He competed in the Champ Car series from 200407, scoring four wins. He competed in Formula One in the 2003 season with Minardi and Jaguar and was the winner of the 2001 International Formula 3000 championship. To date, he is the tallest person to have raced in Formula One.”

Hes probably the nicest guy on the circuit. That's the impression I have of him.
Always seems to be smiling... even when a mechanical failure ruined his race.

It’s kind of hard to imagine how any big-time racing organization would be racing in open cockpits in 2015.

Sadly, Wilson may have suffered the same injury that killed Ayrton Senna in 1994. I'm not sanguine that he will recover, though.

Yes, Wilson is my favorite IndyCar driver, mostly due to his great personality and that I’ve never heard him utter an ungracious word in all the years I’ve heard him interviewed. I was sick when they showed the replay of the accident and he was motionless in the car. Prayers that he and the medical team can pull through and he can recover.

The problem with hanging your head out of the car is that even though accidents aren;t common, when they do happen they are devastating.
A canopy could have saved jules verne, who recently died, after a head injury in F1 last season where he ploughed under a crane. The medical evacuation issue your raise is real, but it seems like there should be an engineering solution. The same argument was made against the HANS device, but now they are used throughout top tier racing.

The FIA has been testing canopies and windshields for F1, they posted an interesting video firing a tire at them. The windshield breaks but does deflect the tire. The jet canopy survives intact.

Senna was killed by lateral G-forces when he hit the wall from the side and his neck snapped. No Han devices in those days. I saw it happen on live TV and almost immediately knew he had been killed.
