Sen. Ted Cruz was overshadowed during much of the first GOP debate, but he finished strong. And this might turn out to be a microcosm of his larger campaign plan.
True, Donald Trump is sucking up everyones oxygen. And, yes, logic would dictate that because he occupies the same populist space as Cruz Trump would take a disproportionate number of votes from the Texas conservative. But, instead, Cruz is polling well in third place, behind Trump and Ben Carson, according to a new Fox News poll.
And if Trump gets out of the race (for now, thats a big if ), its possible that Cruz could inherit at least some of Trumps supporters.

Which shows the brilliance of Cruz. He was the only candidate who saw the potential of Trump from the beginning. Whatever happens, Cruz stands to win either Trump supporters or an influential position in the Trump administration.
Yes, but Rand Paul and Cruz have filed extension requests to delay their submissions. Do you know if Cruz has filed all the paperwork including financial disclosures?
“he surprising performance of Cruz despite the lack of coverage this morning.”
The media have purposely cut Cruz and Carson out in favor of losrs like Bush, Rubio and heaven forbid, Christie.
I thought I also heard Bush hasn’t completed his filings.
No.
No inside info on my part.
>>Are these the words of a campaign that will implode? Really?<<
I think Trump is getting stronger with NO signs of imploding.
He is pissing off all the right people (Will, hrc, jerry rivers, etc.).
I am pm his side!
We’re a full year out from the actual primary vote. Every candidate enjoying front-runner high-profile status this early will suffer brutal attacks and will unlikely survive, being either drained of money or beaten into oblivion over some gaffe. Problem is, the race has started and one need be in it to win.
Methinks Trump does not expect to win the nomination (much less office) - though he’ll take it should he manage to anyway - and has arranged with Cruz to take his followers when he does bail. Much of what Cruz wants & needs to say is not palatable to the general voter pool, at least until someone as respectable yet garish as Trump plows the path and gets enough “he’s nuts, but he makes sense” to persuade people that a subsequent candidate “isn’t nuts, and makes sense”.
The more Trump campaigns, by coming up with plans etc, the more clearly Cruz shines, because he has already been fighting the fight. Cruze doesn't need to formulate a position because he has already been battling for that position. Cruz repeatedly shows that he is the conservative in action not just another campaign conservative. Trump may or may not be sincere, but nobody really knows and that is his Achilles heal. Those who have been watching for more than the last few months have no question that Cruz is sincere and bold, that is what scares the liberals and the GOPe more than anything else.
Ted Cruz: The Compromise Candidate.
Jerry Rivers?
Love it!
So sick of Geraldo. Hispanic wannabe.
Thinks he’s hip and cool.
What a fraud.
Trump getting out of the race is not just a “big if”, it is pure fantasy and wishful thinking.
I think it's time for Cruz to live up to his reputation as a “bomb thrower” in congress, and start driving his message home with potential voters.
Eloquent speeches work for some arguments, and bare knuckled brawls work for others, and nothing gets the attention of Americans faster than getting into a knockdown drag-out fight.
Take the gloves off Cruz, and let Americans know loud and clear what you're made of and what you want for our country. Trump is doing this, and people are listening.
I sure hope so.
Actually only about 25% of republicans love it. The rest of us find it barely tolerable.
Yes indeed. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t flat out say “non aggression pact,” and if T wins Cruz gets atty gen. No idea what Trump would want if Cruz wins-—he has it all.

Trump has filed the papers. Cruz has not.
I am beginning to change my mind on this. The immigration plan he developed with Sessions is an example of why he is getting better. However, I think he waited too long and lost an opportunity to increase in the polls with his debate performance. The four outside candidates are polling about 55% and all increased except Trump. He can overcome this but the job got a little harder. His interview with Todd was excellent.
