Donald Trump Talks Like a Third-Grader
Politico ^ | 8-13-2015 | JACK SHAFER

Posted on 08/14/2015 10:20:26 PM PDT by Citizen Zed

Donald Trump isn’t a simpleton, he just talks like one. If you were to market Donald Trump’s vocabulary as a toy, it would resemble a small box of Lincoln Logs. Trump resists multisyllabic words and complex, writerly sentence constructions when speaking extemporaneously in a debate, at a news conference or in an interview. He prefers to link short, blocky words into other short, blocky words to create short, blocky sentences that he then stacks into short, blocky paragraphs.

The end result of Trump’s word choice is less the stripped-down prose style of Ernest Hemingway than it is a spontaneous reinvention of Ogden’s Basic English, the pared-down lexicon of 850 words selected by early 20th century linguist/philosopher C.K. Ogden as the bedrock of a new world language. In the August 6th Republican candidates debate, Trump answered the moderators’ questions with linguistic austerity. Run through the Flesch-Kincaid grade-level test, his text of responses score at the 4th-grade reading level. For Trump, that’s actually pretty advanced. All the other candidates rated higher, with Ted Cruz earning 9th-grade status. Ben Carson, Mike Huckabee, and Scott Walker scored at the 8th-grade level. John Kasich, the next-lowest after Trump, got a 5th-grade score.

Trump’s low grade at the debates wasn’t a fluke. His comments from an August 11 news conference in Michigan earned only a 3rd-grade score.

As Trump well knows, sports pages are written at a fifth grade level. The average American doesn’t use multisyllabic words as a measure of intelligence. In fact, I would hazard that most find such activity a leftist/elitist fetish. Regardless, the majority are really just looking for someone to kick all the multisyllabic asses in DC.

Straight talk doesn’t require more syllables; it requires conviction.

I have been called worse. Any particular reason?

I am a red-headed bastard stepchild with a big mouth to the “my GOP right-or-wrong” crowd. Is that you?

They love him....He loves them.

Completely aside, I love heelers—great little dogs for ranching. My folks had quite a few over the years.

Trump is an Ivy Leaguer. U of P is Ivy League. I’ll try not to hold that against him since a good pal of mine graduated from Wharton and is still fairly normal.

#63, the difference is those kid’s generation could sign their names in cursor and do math without a calculator. They weren’t pampered, and didn’t know what PC was. They were a tough hard skin bunch compared to today’s generation.

After reading some of the comments, I find it amazing how many self-defined “principled conservatives” are so much in agreement with the likes of Politico/Salon/Huffington/GOPe/and other sundry enemies of Freedom of the People....I recognize a few who are always twisting things so they can “be right” no matter how wrong they are and who don’t support/stand for anything by donating funds and commitment, but who are so very good (like the average Dim) at finding fault with that which is pretty damn decent.

I’ve got just one thing to say to this idiot write; “corpse-man”. I’m sure he thinks Obama is brilliant, but amazingly his brilliantness doesn’t know how to pronounce “corpsman”.

I’m oh so tired of being lectured on just how brilliant the elites are, when most of them don’t know how to tie their own shoes.

Looks like my 3rd grade class photo....except in the 3rd grade I was attending a One Room Schoolhouse, MILLER’S SCHOOL, at Brodbecks, York County, PA.

I gather you sent that photo as a putdown of Trump enthusiasts. Sorry. The school photo from Miller’s School of 1946 would have looked very similar, except that it included all 8 grades.

If one could trace the life story of each person in your photo they would find that they all, like the ones in my school, though they look like a motley crew, in their own way, did alright in life; from serving in the military to nursing to farming to being mothers and homemakers, etc., etc. Some of them may have even risen to exceptional heights, if we only knew.

You’ll find that Trump people are the real people, who make this Country work. The democRats constituancy is predominantly layabouts and gimmedats.

I’M PROUD OF TRUMP’S CROWD!

Why, a child of 10 could see that this country is in trouble and changes are needed. We must find one!

My experience of hearing “liberals” like Al Gore or Obama talk is that they think their audience is vastly inferior in IQ.
