In the largest watershed study of its kind, Michigan State University researchers have sampled 64 river systems in the state for E. coli and the human fecal bacteria B-theta and found that, in a nutshell, septic tanks aren't working.
At least not as well as experts thought. The researchers say that "sample after sample" shows bacterial concentrations are "highest where there were higher numbers of septic systems in the watershed area," water expert Joan Rose tells Phys.org.

so that’s what’s wrong with Detroit...
Or as Joycelyn Elders might say,
we just need safer sh!t.
If it weren’t for bacteria, none of us exist.
E Coli = farm poo poo
This study to be followed by an Executive Order banning or at least restricting bowel movements and placing all bowel movements under the control of the EPA!
...no...but...it might give them the impetus to begin to insist on septic systems which are much more involved, expensive and impose burdens on people living in the exurbs, suburbs and rural areas.
Correlation does not equal causation.
There are also a lot of larger parcels such as farms with associated livestock, fowl and such in areas where there are a lot of septic systems.
A properly functioning septic tank and drainfield system does not discharge ANY water (directly to streams and ricers
“...any water directly to streams and rivers.”
Proofreading is my friend...
There are also a lot of "fake" septic systems in areas with a lot of septic systems. What's a fake system, one where the out pipe runs directly down to the river or other open waste area.
Howard Hughes is very afraid.
Wait, he’s dead.
See how toxic a tiny amount of poop is?
Now, if it were Cecil the Zebra eating lion’s poop it would be healing and sacred.
What a crappy job.
Too many hunters afield ?
Too many ferals in the streets ?
Here’s how it works, poop in the toilet, flush said toilet, waste goes down the pipe to the septic tank, solids (poop and toilet paper)settle to the bottom of the septic tank and waste water flows out of upper tank pipe to drain field, wastewater in perforated drain pipe leaches into drain rock and is filtered by soil.
If you are have high groundwater then wastewater is not getting filtered before it hits natural groundwater. Presto-bingo, you have contaminated water.
The EPA and state ecology departments will step in sometime in the near future and outlaw all septic disposal systems because the groundwater is consider “waters of the state”. This is in direct violation of the new Clean Water Act rules.
For each Poo, you must disperse it across a hundred acre wood.
Oh bother.
The grass is greenest and thickest over the area of my septic tank leeching field. No, I do not have my vegetable garden there!
When we lived in the country we had a septic system and a water well. Our water well was about 100 feet deep. Could that have been a problem?
